Seeing these pictures makes me sad when I open my hood and see this:

Should I hire a child to polish all the salt corrosion on my engine? Is there a way you can chemically reverse it?

You're one helluva photographer!

I would remove the turbo plenum and valve cover and have them glass-bead blasted. While the valve cover may have originally had more of a polish finish, you would at least have a nice clean uniform look to it and the corrosion would be gone.
Paint the aircleaner cover and then detail out the rest of the bay.
Restorable? Certainly! You did see the 'before' pics of mine earlier in the thread, right?

I would presently classify mine as "ultra dirty".

Thanks Chris! I think I took more, but forgot to upload them. Let me dig in and check.

Here's another! Ponton 190D

Compliments of MB Classic Center

And another, an '82 240D owned by the original owner! (the guy with the Switzerland shirt is the owner of the car, proudly telling the other gentleman how he cleans up the engine bay).

I'm not worthy of those engine pic's, but here is my '99 when I was fixing o'rings not long ago. I should actually detail it, but this is just the way it looks all the time.

My '87 300D Turbo (W124, OM603) will never win any prizes because it was abused when it was young. However, the engine did look pretty good when I finished replacing the head last month. Runs good, too.

I'm a semi-professional photographer but I would like to tag around with you on one of these and get some pointers - awesome photos!

This car is actually a 180D and one of my favorites at the center. Cute was mentioned on my 240, but this is CUTE!! I would love to have one of these.

I was telling our host at the classic center I had a John Alden designed sailing yacht in Seattle that I sold before I moved to CA 20 years ago. It was built in Oregon in 1958 and had a 180D motor for an auxilliary - same as this little car. Fresh water cooled with a paragon gearbox. Ran like a champ. The boat was 42' overall and 10tons. The little diesel would push it at about 8kts if you were in a hurry. They also used those motors for refergeration units on semi-truck trailers and for generator sets.

I was flattered to be personally invited to the Newport Beach Concours at the St. Regis at Monarch Beach by one of their promotors. He was there scouting for cars for their show. The car is just old enough (Mercedes to 1979) and he said he really wanted cars like mine in there, people would enjoy seeing it. Wow! We went last year, it's a terrific venue with some out-of-this-world cars. Mine pales in comparison. Locals should definitely check it out - Jun 24-26. Unfortunately I have a trip planned and will be out of town.

Those 240D engine bays really should be seen in real life daylight. Unbelievably clean. I give my vote to C Brown's car for cleanest/original-est diesel engine I've seen personally.

My cars have no chance of ever being that clean under the hood (or elsewhere for that matter). I do try to keep 'em tidy enough to be able to work under there without getting filthy though.

Thanks Chris for correcting me, yes it is a 180D not a 190D.

Would you agree that a passion for photography and in the MB marque is a good combination?
