Has anyone converted a wagon to diesel?

Has anyone converted an e class wagon to diesel. I would love to own a 2001 Wagon with all wheels drive with a diesel motor. I wonder if anyone has ever attampted this conversion, or what difficulties there could be?

If I get my hands on the wagon I want from around the corner, I'll be doing that very conversion

I would love to have that wagon with a diesel. The updated model like a 2001 would be what I would like to convert. The motor should fit just nice, nut sure if the transmissionare the same and if it will bolt right on?

Legislation usually prevents people from going gas to diesel and likewise. Process varies by state, but it is generally a PITA since you have to get the title changed and think about emissions/inspection etc.

florida it's legal I believe. I asked the DMV about it the last time I was out there, they said they'd do a cursoary inspection make sure nothing is unsafe (poor mans MOT) and then pass it and issue the new title

Since that car has a canbus systeim IIRC, where the engine computer is integrated into the other systems, it will take a lot of electronic savvy and possibly disabling systems to make it work.

I was going to do the same to convert a late-late 124 wagon to diesel, but ran into similar problems to a lesser degree in the '95 (still canbus but at least the transmission was manually controlled).

Neat project if you can pull it off and install a non-electronic turbo 606.

I believe that one of the front drive axles passes through the oil sump. If that is the case, if you could get the oil sump from the gas motor to fit on the diesel motor, then it might be possible.

They made 4matic diesels, years/compatibility depends on the donor engine the OP is trying to obtain.

Where that is true of the 124 with the early Styre-Puch 4matic system, I'm not sure that the later viscous-coupling el-cheapo version in the 210 series did.

I don't know much about the w210, but along the same lines, I suspect there would be serious compatibility issues with this "integrated" front differential and the transfer case.

Were diesel w210 wagons imported to Canada? Perhaps that could be your best bet.

This is my plan as well. Bring one over from Canada.

I converted a gas Jetta to TDI. Here in Texas, the extent of the "PITA" you describe was going downtown to have them put a "D" on the title. They charged me $2 for new plates. Took 2 minutes. No emissions hassle either, they hear it rumble up and test it as a diesel. Couldn't be more easy.

I would let legislation and registration be low on my list of worries for a swap like this. Worry about electronics and transmissions first.

Did not know that they made the wagon diesel for the Canadian market. I will have to check that out.

I am assuming that if you had a 99 wagon and a 99 diesel donor car you could just swap everything over to the wagon.

I am assuming the trans is the same.
