Now I need to clarify this by saying that I don't drive a whole lot, but I drive my '59 220S cabriolet as a daily driver in nice weather and my '83 240D most other times. I'd say I put about 5000 miles a year on each of them. Drove the cabriolet on a trip from NC to PA and Ohio this summer. Took the 240D from NC to FL last month. Have no problems driving either of them on trips. I also have a '99 E300TD that is a little more comfortable and quicker and it is usually my long trip interstate car.

No NH tirp this year. Actually, it's been several years since I've been up your way. I hope to get up there next year, but probably not in the ponton. I try to take the ponton out once or twice a year on a long trip to give it some good exercise. Otherwise it's just an around town car within a hundred or so miles of home. Not sure what is in store for next year.

Mine's older than me, 1982 240d. I've driven in to California and back a few times, I drive it frequently, not since it's been cold though, that's what the jeep is for, cold and snow.

The 220S cabriolet may be the most famous Mercedes to appear in a movie, being the vehicle a drunken Cary Grant uses to escape from evil pursuers who are trying to fake his "suicide"...there are LOTS of neat cars in Hitchcock movies.

A few thoughts- first, I don't find the MB to be any more expensive than any other car to keep in good condition.

Second, this has to be one of the few car threads where you get no respect until your mileage cracks 250,000.

I just bought my 85 300SD to be my daily driver. 800 miles per week
and handles better at 75 than my 2004 pickup. Only getting 21 mpg but that should change with some recommendations from the forum. 210 K (this month).

Just a few thoughts:

21MPG is extremly low for an SD unless you are running wide open. First I would check the odometer against some mileage posts along the interstates (do the easiest thing first). The number wheels have been known to slip and indicate less miles than traveled therefore less MPG. My 300SD gets 28 to 30 MPG.

I would think any MB would handle better than any pick uptruck. THe MB has a much lower center of gravity. You are comparing apples to banannas.

I bought a 1977 240D new in Virginia Beach. Have owned it ever since. It now has 472,235 miles on it. Has been worked on by the same mechanic since the day I bought it. It has been a great vehicle. Gets consistently 30 miles/gal. Pete in Viginnia Beach

My daughter drives a 1984 190D daily. About to turn over to 300,000 miles. I drive a 1987 300SDL daily - 170,000 miles.

I bet I have seen you a time or two tooling around the Tidewater area in the 240D. I spent '81 to '93 stationed at or out of NOB & NAS NORVA, lived in VB and Chesapeake durring those years.

'83 300SD with 319,000 is my daily driver (business). '82 300D is my son's daily driver (163,000). Just sold the '84 300D (410,000) that had been my daily driver. I'm sure it will keep going another 100K...I'd drive it anywhere but decided to try an SD for awhile.. Great cars and relatively simple mechanics once you get used to the quirks!

Since this got dredged back up....I've got three old ones these days...a 1971 280SE, a 1979 300SD, and a 1983 300D. Just took the 300D on a Trip from Washington DC to Bizmark, North Dakota and back this summer....turned 200K miles passing by Cleveland on the return trip.
