Transmission dipstick and fluid question (85 300D)

I want to change my transmission fluid, but cannot find synthetic Dex/Merc, anyone know who carries it or if there is some other type I can use? Also I took my dipstick out and I don't know how to read it. It has a red cap, and the stick is zig zag near the bottom of the stick. Where is the fill line?

There should be a fill line on the dipstick, but it can be tricky to see. As for synthetic fluid, Mobil 1 synthetic ATF is pretty much universal.

I used BG synthetic ATF and am more than pleased. It was $5/qt and shifts are nice and smooth.

The lower of the two marks indicate a "cold" reading and the higher mark indicates a "hot" reading.

Ok, got the mobil 1 fluid, thanks!

Is it ok if I drain and fill multiple times to replace most of the old fluid?

Like this:

drain x liters, add x liters, drive
drain x liters, add x liters, drive
drain x liters, change filter, add x liters, drive

You should also have a drain plug on the torque converter so you can drain all the fluid and replace it.

Yep just drain the torque converter and when you drop the pan to change the filter empty what ever is left, you will have virtually zero old fluid left over.
