Keeps Running When Key Turned Off 1985 300SD
I replaced the glow plug relay in my 85 300 sd with one from the junk yard. The glow plug light still did not light up. I started the engine with a one second spray of ether into the air intake. The engine started but when I turned off the key, the engine kept running. I used the stop button under the hood and that stopped things just fine.
What blockheaded thing did I do this time? Thanks,

Keep the ether away from your car at all costs, you are much better off cranking it over and over until it starts rather than using the can of death.
It's likely you need to replace the glow plugs, that is the most common reason the light doesn't turn on. As for the shut down, look for any loose vacuum lines you may have bumped into while changing out the relay. |

Look at all the vacuum lines in the engine bay, you probably accidentally unpluged one of them. The engine shut off in your car is controlled by vacuum.

Thanks, I'll check the vacuum lines. It is a relief to know that I didn't mess things up worse. I have heard about the ether of death but I did read on here that some mechanic used one second of ether into the air intake at the front of the car and said that was okay.

I went out and checked the vacuum hoses and did find one disconnected. Re connected it and the engine stops just fine.
I guess I will just have to bite the bullet and replace the glow plugs. But I had some replaced a year of two ago so it seemed a bit early to have to do it again. Thanks,

Glad it was a simple fix. If you changed some of your glow plugs recently, it's likely one of the ones you didn't change that is causing an issue now. Make sure they are all getting voltage, and you can test the resistance. I've never had luck checking the resistance, I've always had to pull them and test them with 12v.

Note, in case you aren't aware, brand is very significant with glow plug reliability. Go with Bosch and I've always just changed all at once rather than hassle with it again any time soon.
Did you ream the glow plug holes? I've heard several folks mention that carbon build up significantly shortens glow plug life.

Did you check the strip fuse in the relay?

Thanks, everyone. I will buy only the right brand and change them all since I don't remember which ones got changed before. I did see five in a package on ebay for $26 for all five. They didn't say which brand they were so I will stay away from those.
