Wiggly oil separator Drain Tube Normal?
I was wondering if the drain tube that connects to the air filter housing should be loose. ( I think its called the turbo drain)
I just replaced the rubber air filter housing mounts and noticed the tube was easily moved around. Its a long tube and doesnt look easy to take out as it looks sort of tangled into the engine, and its not coming out even if i try a little, so i wondered if it was meant to be so loose? I can move it mostly front to back probably 5 or 6 inches and as well side to side (or around in a circle) but the front to back movement is the largest. Its been a cause of leaky oil since 2 of the 3 rubber mounts were broken. It seems to be well set in the tube now that the mounts are on but I wonder if the bottom of the tube is still leaking. I have a hard time seeing down there. |

it's not supposed to be loose, and it's not the turbo tube. it's the oil separator drain back tube. there is supposed to be a good o-ring on the underside of the air cleaner, and another on the nipple sticking out of the oil pan.
also there is a bolt that attaches the tube to the back of the exhaust manifold... really hard to get to.

So it sounds like the tube is simply resting on the oil pan nipple. The picture is a little old. I have since put on a new O ring on the underside of the air cleaner. |

the tube is held still by the bolt. it's kept on the oil pan nipple by pressure from the properly secured air cleaner. in addition to the o-ring on the air cleaner, there is another one at the bottom of the tube too...

The bracket was still secured but it had broken off of the tube. There was a big hole where it broke and it leaked real bad. I removed it by taking the lower brace out of the way. Then carefully welded the bracket back on. (tube is thin keep your heat on the bracket) The hardest part was bending and realigning the tube with the air cleaner. If the bolt is missing and the brackets still there your in luck. Just replace the bolt but its hard to get to as vstech has said. Best of luck.

The Red Arrow points to the Bolt that goes through a Metal Piece with a hole welded to the Drain Tube and as you see the bolt also goes through that thick Metal Bracket and there is a Nut not shown that goes on the Bolt. With the Turbocharger still on it is easier to see if you go behind the Right Front Wheel and looking up from under the Car. At the bottom of the Tube and behind the real Turbo Drain Tube is a little Nipple that is part of the upper Oil Pan with an O-ring on it.
