85 300 TD Wagon inner "Headlight" purpose?

Im wondering what the two inner "headlights" are for on my 85 300-TD wagon. They've never seemed to work, although I have working regular headlights as well as brights (high-beams), the two smaller round inner lights are a mystery still.

I tried every setting on the light switch knob and nothing happens (including pulling the knob out), so my assumption is they are burned out. I tried a quick online search for a new pair but I'm not even sure what I would call them. How useful are they?

Its been cracked since Ive had the car but now finally the cracks turned to large holes after ditching the car in a snow bank today. Thankfully teh broken light was the only damage. ( and it was already broken)

those smaller lights are the fog lights. Check connections and the fuse. The lights are sealed beams (US Spec)[driving lamps] so broken lenses might pose an issue. -edit- However, the fogs are not sealed, see responses below for explanation.

Any Idea what the specs are? I just looked on the parts store linked to the forum here and they are $71 a piece. Not a priority for me if Ive lived without them for this long. At the same time it would be nice to have a working set.

It seems they were Bosh OEM and perhaps there are more generic sets out there but Im not sure what to look for. I see the regular headlights/highbeams are 7 inches and are only about $13 at some online part stores. The fog lights cant be that different can they? What size would they be?

The inner lights are Bosch fog lamps. They use a halogen H3 lamp, 55 watts. The beam patter on a fog lamp is very different from a low or high beam.

You should be able to source a good used set from somewhere here.

for them to turn on, the headlights have to be on, in low beam position. then you pull out on the switch one click. the switch has an additional pull out position, but it's for euro's with rear fogs and does nothing on US models.

This could get really metaphysical, if you want to go there:

You mentioned "the inner headlight"... is that like the 'third eye'?
-perhaps your sixth sense for fixing Mercedes? ..... I wonder.

Don't forget to align the headlights when you're ready.

The stock fog lights are not sealed beam as mentioned above, and use the H-3 bulbs as Compu_85 mentioned.

They are avaliable in both clear and amber glass.

There are some after market sealed beams that will fit. I saw a 123 in a parking lot a couple days ago with some, think they were hella`s.

Not mentioned above, but if you are willing to do some simple wiring (if needed), consider upgrading to a Euro lamp. OEM Euros are spendy, but 'Depo' makes a decent knock off that is fairly popular. If you're looking at 150$ for fogs, you might consider aftermarket lamps.

Its not sounding like theres something generic that may fit. Im surprised, as I wouldnt have thought that the fog lights would be so different from regular headlights as to make them 5 or six times the price. But perhaps its just because they are hard to find? Coulntd it simply be retrofitted with some average joe round lights? the proper size?

I'd recommend making sure there's electricity going there before pushing too hard to replace. The fogs are powered downstream of one of the low beam fuses (right side, fuse 11?) so if that's not working you'll get no power.

As others have said, parking or low beam, first detent. Second detent is for rear fogs on euros. You will not get an amber light in the switch on US models.

Put a voltmeter on the red/white wire in the connector for the headlight.

The diameter is listed as 5 3/4 inch on other sites. Getting just lenses or bulbs shouldn't be too difficult. Peruse/post in the parts forum.
