I used safety wire/lockwire on one of my SD's hangers. I could never get the "gap" to close enough to get a rubber band on there, I even used a jack on the exhaust.

X2 on that one!

You may find it easier or necessary even to loosen the more rigid front end bits to get some more height / air / better position at the back. Fit the rubbers and then let go. Re-tighten the front.

I also use a giant flat blade screwdriver to lever them over the hooks. It works good. The screwdriver is at least 20" long, maybe even close to 24".

+1!

When on your back lift up on the muffler to gain better room (the closer the two hooks are together, the easier).

As vstech said, lift the exhaust with a jack and they go on a lot easier, and big fat flathead screwdriver to lever over the hook. Always satisfying when you get the bugger on there

Vstech is correct. I use the same rubber doughnuts and jack up the muffler a bit. Otherwise I think it would be very difficult to get them installed. Mine last several (like ten) years.

The one I asked the question about isn't a matter of jacking up the muffler. The one I already installed is an up/down hangar. The one in question is an angled hangar coming from the left side over to a hook on the exhaust which leaves the hanger almost sideways. In other words, it pulls the pipes to the left instead of just holding the pipes up.

Sounds as if the exhaust has had some work done on it in the past and things don't quite line up. I know that is the case with mine as well. The hanger at the muffler sort of pulls at an angle. You shouldn't have to stretch anything unless something is bent or welded incorrectly from previous work done.

BTW, I bought hangers from the dealership and I'm not sure why but they have lasted 4 years vs. the 4 months on the previous ones that I tried. I believe if you use the 560E instead of 300SD, it brings up the hangers with an imbedded wire.

Right ! However if it was not hung correctly to start with you will have problems.
I have been using a long handled flat blade screw driver (rubber friendly lube, sometimes my saliva) and push the exhaust pipe, muffler, resonator up with my free hand.

SEC for the center muffler $1.30

SEC rear muffler .99¢ ea.

SEC rear Muffler (after mkt) $1.02

Nothing looks bent to me. It all looks OE. There is no possible way the hook on the left side of the pipes could be underneath the hook on the left side.

Well, first things first.

Is the muffler the correct type for your SD? A smaller type may have been installed in its place, placing the hooks farther apart. The P/N should be at the very bottom edge of the muffler IIRC.

How are the engine mounts? I'm thinking maybe the engine might be skewed a little if it has bad mounts, pushing the exhaust to one side more than the other. Same deal with transmission mount.

The screwdriver is the key. Just stick it through the doughnut and put it in the depressed area of the hook. Pull the donut toward the hook with the driver and then roll the driver over the end of the hook looping the donut over at the same time. then slide out the driver.

Easy peasy.

The donuts are general purpose, I replaced those in mine with the square type. We'll see how long they'll last.
Almost 4 years later they are still holding up fine. The ones I got are p/n 1244920044.

MB on left, CRP on right. Just got a set of spares for when the current ones go.

From my understanding the middle rubber part helps prevent the hooks from jumping off the rubber donut when the vehicle goes over bumps.
