Exhaust hanger rubber bands

I noticed my daughter's 'new' 84SD exhaust was hanging loose in the back. I bought a couple of the rubber bands, and thinking it only needed one, I took one to the storage lot to install last weekend. Looking closely, I realized it needs two. One on the right which holds the exhaust up and one on the left which pulls the exhaust to the left. I put the right one on but the distance between the two hooks on the left side is substantially greater and I'm wondering how people stretch out the rubber band to catch those hooks. Looks like it will take a fair amount of effort to get it to stretch that far.

By the way, the parts database showed a stretchy rubber band and a less stretchy rubber band. I bought two of both. I can't imagine the less stretchy one reaching at all.

you can get them from places like this. no connection to merchant.

http://www.spomotorsports.com/exhato4.html

I would stay away from the 'pliers' type, I have it and it is pretty useless.

I use a similar tool available from Harbor Freight that is made for removing heater hoses. Cheap and effective.

Two? IIRC there are 4 hangers on my SD muffler, and two more along the length of the pipe, not to mention the hanger attached to the transmission...
I use the metal reinforced rubber with the support buttons in the center. you don't stretch the rubber, you LIFT the muffler into position to install the hangers.

Do not ask how I know this , I just do !
If this was installed incorrectly to start with you may want to loosen the flange forward closer to the tranny where those pipes meet. If it is not "hanging"
right you end up with tension at the rear when you install the new hangers.

I have tried all kinds of ways to get tose dang things on. Hay Hook, Grease Seal Puller, (like Harbor Freight sells). what I found that helps is, using some spray Silicone on the rubber, and use a long wide flat screwdriver. the thing slips right on.

Iam laying on my back using my knee to push up on the muffler to hold it as close as possible to the stops. The car is usually up on ramps to elevate it some.

this is on my 123, think the SD is the same set up in the rear.

Is this the first time since 2002 you have done these?

I keep a stock of about 5 on hand as I know one will break about every 6 months.

Yep, never had one fail. Not sure about Vtech's hangars. The rubber band version is what showed up in a parts search when I bought mine.

I'm talking about right at the very back just before the pipes end.

Some hooks will work with certain hangers. Check the shape of the holes when using the square hangers or those reinforced inside with metal.

The donuts are general purpose, I replaced those in mine with the square type. We'll see how long they'll last.

No real need for special tooling. I use a flat head driver as a lever to install these things.
