I love that movie. Being from the Sandusky area, it's a cult classic around here.

Yes, there was a fairly active W123D club based out of St. Louis a few years back. Vince, the founder, is somewhat of a savant when it comes to the 123's. He was pretty eccentric and extremely focused on 123's, though. Maybe some of the oldtimers here remember him, screen name Vlayton.

He kind of overwhelmed himself with his obsession and had to back off. He was very active in the Gateway section of MBCA as well. He had a cool logo, stickers, a registry, and even a club house. It was fun and frankly I miss the guy.

I do love the idea of an Vintage Diesel Auto Club (VDAC?) rather than a exclusively Mercedes one. A few of my friends have Audi 5000s, Volvo 240s, VW Quantums/Dashers and BMW 524tds; they are all pretty good cars. I personally love the Lincoln Mark VII diesel, so maybe we should focus exclusively on automobiles, not trucks, and open it to all car nationalities, prior to say, year 1995.

What you say?
Keep the creativity flowing!

VDC sounds good, why add "auto" ?

Make it 10+ years old, ownership not required.

I own 2 diesel trucks, both modded, one more than the other.

As for tasteless accessories, I detest the stupid testicle decoration. The backwards flame stickers were bad enough...

Best of luck.

Let's make that 15 years. Ownership will not be required. So far, here are the people we can appeal:

-Diesel Mercedes (W114, W115, W123, W126, W201, W124, W140...)
-VW Rabbit/Dasher/Quantum/Jetta/Passat diesel
-Audi 5000 D & BMW 524td
-Volvo 240's and 740s diesels
-Renaults and Peugeots diesels
-Lincoln Mark VII & Cadillac DeVille diesel
-Toyota Corolla/Camry & Datsun diesels
-Chevy Chevette/Ford Escort/Mercury Lynx diesels

Anybody know of more diesel rarities in the US?

So far, here is what we need to set up the club:
-Vice-President & Treasurer
-Representatives & moderators for each car make community
-Website developer (I can provide hosting and domain)

Suggestions! Ideas! All is welcome!

I think this is a great idea, and more so if its not too specific. A "Vintage Diesel Club" is a great idea and would appeal to a lot of different people.

I was a member of a "123 D" club based out of MO for a while, but it was way too specific, and lacked the broad interest that would make such a club last, and subsequently died away, even with the huge number of people who drive 123s.

Also, IDOC, while cool sounding as "Import diesel owners club" also stands for "Illinois Department of Corrections".
If we go with that, we could all get yellow jumpsuits like in the fugitive.

Talking

First I see a thread for Mercedes 300 with ED.

I like the name "Vintage Diesel Club". For short, we could use a 3 letter acronym, like "VDC" or simply call it the "VD Club".

Maybe I should switch to a Freudian Therapist.

Don't forget the old GM diesels! I don't think too many people would be fans of them though

Yup!, My Dad bought one of the first GM diesels in our area ( Olds Toronado )
he had owned a 69 Toronado previously and liked it. Needless to say this was not built during a high point at GM without even getting into the engine issues.
He did get a replacement motor from GM but crap from crap is crap.
This did not deter him from buying another Diesel though. As soon as he could afford it he bought a brand new 85 300SD ( the one I drive now) I never really thought about his need to own a diesel until I gave it some serious thought.
Both of my grandfathers were old school railroad engineers and 1 had been a
MX ( sorry not certain of the correct terminology) in the Navy working on ships.
During WW1. Sorry got off subject.
Love the club idea !

Count me in!! It would be nice to belong to a club, after 3 decades of driving diesel cars (and of course boats). I like the VDC initials, sort of reminds me of the RAC (Royal Auto Club).

Dont forget the Peugeot diesel's from the 80's , they made quite a few of them. Actually Peugeot 504 diesel wagon is almost as cool as the 300td.... Renault also made some diesels. I believe Isuzu made some diesel cars as well. Land Rover made alot of diesels as well.

I think alot of folks would love to belong to this club, as diesels are such a sub-species, particularly ones from the 80's and earlier.

What do you think?

As I asked before... anyone handy with website building?

The problem I see is that I just found a club called VDCA (Vintage Drivers Club of America), you can see their website here.

How about Classic Diesel Club. The CDC(Center for Disease Control).

Or Antique Diesel Club, or Timless Diesel Club.

Emblem looks cool. Might try to highlight the glow plugs a little to make them stand out.

"TDC"

'Cause Top Dead Center is cool when you can find it. As is a nice running diesel purring down the road at either 35mph or 85mph.
