Are you reading in a turbo owners manual... which would indicate an automatic trans ' gear selections' ...and certain rear gear ratios... or a 240 owners manual manual ?

Does that same manual , if for the 240 manual trans, recommend certain shift points for best mileage ?

http://www.oldcarmanualproject.com/manuals/Europe/Mercedes/1976/Owners/pages/page_40_jpg.htm

1976 240D owners manual.

MT:
"Do not exceed the maximum speed in the individual gears. See line markings on the speedometer. "

AT:
"Do not exceed top speeds corresponding to the individual selector lever positions. Refer to speedometer markings."

I'm satisfied. The odds that they would use the markings to mean something different in 76 than in 80-something are phenomenally low. When they establish a convention, they stick to it, typically.

I was reading from the manual that came in my 240 manual, but, if I'm not mistaken, it's the same manual given to all the models. If you look on the front, it has all of them listed.

The owners manuals for the 240 and the turbo cars are not the same.

The turbo autos say
" Do not exceed top speeds in the individual selector lever positions. Refer to speedometer markings. "

The 240 manual says
"Recommended shift points for manual transmission
To obtain good results regarding fuel economy, the following shift points are recommended:
Shift
from 1st to 2nd at 13 mph
from 2nd to 3rd at 22 mph
from 3 to 4th at 32 mph. "

I left off the km/h readings...

So the question is ... are they marked differently in the turbo compared to the 240 ?
and if you change out the trans... will the advisory markings still be correct ?

The shift-markings on the speedometer show the maximum-speed allowed for each shift-point. The shift-points in the owner's manual are recommeded for best fuel-economy, well below the maximum-speed markings on the speedometer.

The question is ... when changing a 240 from manual to auto or the other way around... do the speedometers need to be changed or altered to conform with MB ' advice' for the current configuration.

On these cars, the speedometer conforms to the rear-end ratio. Manual AND automatic 240Ds came with a 3.69 rear. So unless the rear-end has been changed to a different ratio, a tranny-swap shouldn't require a speedometer-change.

As far as the maximum shift-speed dial markings, both manual or automatic trannys usually found in a 240D are 4-speed. If there's any difference in the maximum speed dial-markings for either, I'll have to check them on my manual 240D when I get down to Virginia-Beach, and compare to the dial on my automatic 240D here in Alexandria. Otherwise I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

With a google image search, it doesn't look like it. From what I found online, the automatics have them a few miles an hour higher, so I guess to get the car like a factory standard, you'd have to swap the speedo. Other than that, I wouldn't worry about it.

I have converted several 240 autos to stick. It is my memory that the hash marks are lower on the automatics to compensate for slip.

So when putting in a stick the allowable engine speed would be slightly higher than the automatic hash marks on the speedo so safety is not an issue.

Changing to a stick marked speedo might offer more authenticity if you are in to that.

One quick question about this swap, the pedel adsembly? will the MT assembly bolt right in?

In my case i have a 82 240d MT car, and a 77 240D AT car... the AT car has a seized engine and a nice body/interior, my MT car has a solid drive train and a crappy body/interior.

So i have everything i need to do the swap correct? ill be switching over the complete engine and tranny. should be just a matter of switching parts from one car to the other... right?

The pedal assy. should interchange. If your AC matters, the compressor, it's location, the AC belt & plumbing will be different.

Based on the '77 240D has a York AC compressor mounted on the top passenger side of the engine. The '82 240D has a Delco R4 compressor on the bottom, driver's side and has holes there in the block for the compressor mounting bolts. Don't know if the '82 engine has holes topside to mount the York compressor & bracket.
