Cabin blower fan W126 87'

Just wanted to share my experience on savings $100 while replacing the fan.

My fan motor want bad after 275,000 miles on the 87 SDL. A replacement was either $101 motor only, or $210 motor and plastic fan.

I had a difficult time removing the 100 dollar plastic fan from the old motor. I finally drilled into the center of the motor shaft with a tiny bit. Steeping up the drill bit size, the heat created from drilling loosened up the 100 dollar plastic fan from the inside out, freeing it from the bad motor.

There was no damage to the plastic (except the chip from trying the hammer method). It fit perfect on the new motor.

Last words of advise: careful with the wire connectors at the motor while removing and reinstalling the unit. The wrecking yard that wanted $150 for a used assembly had several motors with broken connections.

I just did this on my 300SDL too!! Where did you get your motor? I got mine at thebenzbin.com for I think $70.. they are pretty cheap if you need parts in the future.. But I priced a new assembly and it was around $250.

To get the blower off the shaft. i placed the blower between two tables and used a center punch to push the motor out of the blower. I did the same to bang the motor out of the housing.

After I bought my new motor, I decided I would try to fix the old one, I took it apart, and sanded the commutator, and still had about 1/8" of brushes left, so I put it all back together with the old motor and it works.. I think I will keep my new one as a spair.

John
