for my long drives with the 300TD i tried to always have:

-heater hose
-2x of each type of filter (primary fuel, secondary fuel, oil, air)
-fuel line
-vacuum lines
-more than the engine's capacity worth of each fluid (oil, coolant, brake, p/s)
-glow plugs
-more than a full set of fuses
-stuff to do wiring (wire, solder, torch, crimps, stripper, etc)
-floor jack + jack stands
-2 spare bundts with tires on em
-multiple spares of all bulbs
-2 of every belt type (ac, ps, alt/water)
-spare SLS high pressure line
-large size fix-a-flat
-couple 4x4 blocks
-couple 2x4s
-spare battery (charged)
-4x 5gal military fuel cans (the awesome scepter ones you cant buy anymore) full
-2 sets of jumper cables (1 set wont start a dead w123)
-MREs (military food rations)
-blankets + pillows

with that, the only times i ever had to call for a tow were when i blew a head gasket, and when i fully seized an engine.

Hey Stan,
Making your car haul all that stuff around is probably why it blew a head gasket & seized !
I would probably blow a gasket trying to carry all that stuff!!

Many times I have repaired a hose with some tape & filled up with water to get home. Just leave the radiator cap on the first notch.
If you are staying in range of your cell phone life is easy.

Better still a roll of self amalgamating tape - great stuff - I drove through a heat wave in France in a clapped out Mini Metro that happened to have a cooling system that had a sprinkler mode... I used a roll!

were you driving to the great wilderness? 1/2 that stuff is easily purchased in any small town.
I'd rather have one decent set of jumper cables than two cheapo's.
wow.

I carry an extra timing chain. just incase I break another one.

I just take my tool box, and maybe some oil. If your valves are adjusted, good belts, hoses, filters are good, tires are good, don`t worry about it. If I have to carry the inventory of an Autozone in my trunk. then the car wasn`t ready in the first place.

Plus, where are you going to carry your luggage?

I am taking my TD to New Mexico in a few months. I plan on putting an extra spare tire on the roof rack... I hope it doesn't provide too much drag. Other than that I will take my usual: tools, fluids. I also take pillows and blankets in the TD, that way I can sleep if I have to and try to make the seat more comfortable.

I also just added a power inverter so I can power stuff up to 400watts. So I might take my little shop light and a cord on this trip. I always take a cooler on long trips too.

Spares to keep in trunk

I keep tools, fuel filters, fluids, belts, and a tire plug kit. Radiator hoses might now be a bad idea. A headlamp (for your head) is nice if you are doing repairs in the dark. If you have a W123, you just need to get the car moving to roll start it, so no real need for jumper cables.

In my experience, fuel filters and belts are the most likely to leave you on the side of the road. P.S. transmission fluid might get you to the gas station if you run out of fuel

wow.
I drive from OC to santa barbara most weekends, and being ready for anything means not calling for a tow or hoping stores are open. A large fraction of those drives happen in the /middle of the night, and the 101 has some decently isolated sections. Cheaper and infinitely faster to be prepared!

How did this turn into what to bring on a long road trip? The original poster was asking for hard to find parts to horde, not what he should carry in the trunk. The two lists are quite different.

The answer to both questions: a phone and a credit card will get you anything you need in a hurry. If you are going to drive 25 year old cars, be prepared to wait a couple of days for some parts. There is no point trying to guess what is going to fail.

You are right

It started in post# 4, then 11, 14 & 15. then in post #16 it shifted gears and really got rolling off course.

The older 123 like my 80 240, use a different style vacuum door actuator. It has 2 rubber diaphrams and blue plastic body. price on line is $135 ea. I have pulled several of these to have as spares. also pull the newer style when I see them, but they are around $30 ea.

as I understand it the drivers door window motor is NLA, so have a few of them for spares.
also window regulators, see some pretty close to new ones.

Blower motors, can`t hurt to have a couple back up on hand, around $27 from PNP. beats trying to find brushes to fix the motor.

Rear axles, good to have a couple of them on hand. I have found some new ones in the yards. around 25 to $35 ea.

Front amber turn signals, rear tail light assemblys and fog lights (clear/amber).

Glow Plug relays, about $10 from PNP. 80 240 must be special, first yr with new style relay, but price on fastlane or APE is $450 , and the one for the 83 240, $157.

VCV is NLA, so grab some of these when you see them.

probably never use this junk, but ya never know.

always good to have a set of belts and filters on hand.

Charlie
