OM 617 Timing Chain Guide Rail Help
I have begun to remove the head of my newest acquisition and have run into a puzzle. I referred to the manual for the timing chain guide rail (on the driver side of the head at the highest point of all guides) and am having a hard time trying to figure out how to get the pin out. I see there is a special puller, but I am unsure how to use it and if there is a way to get it out w/o the tool. Could someone please elaborate? I need to remove the turbo and then the timing gear to get the head loose from the chain. The hell of this is that there is very little stretch. I am pulling this because cyl. 3 crapped out on me and I am doing some investigative work to see why there is a misfire and a TON of blowby.

There are Zero reasons to remove the timing gear in order to pull the head. Perhaps you are thinking of the idler sprocket that the chain runs UNDER? That can stay also.
You do not need the special tool to remove the pin either. You can use a bolt and stacked washers / sockets to draw the bolt out. Just be cautious and don't force anything beyond your good judgement.... if such a thing exists. Use washers and maybe a socket that have an inner diameter larger than the hole that the pin is recessed into. Last edited by jt20; 02-22-2011 at 09:30 PM. Reason: tpyo |

The FSM specifies a slide hammer if I remember correctly. I'd go for the bolts and over sized nuts and washers as spacers routine as recommended by jt20 and Haynes... less chance of unintended damage...
...in fact that's what I did...
