Hmm this guy is looking for closer to the $4800.00 for his car. I thought it was high and then with this problem and the mileage...

Then I can't get over how nice the car is......

On one hand that is a good situation....
Offer him what you are willing to pay.....and do not go any higher... like a last second bid on Ebay... consider it locked in once you make it... be prepared to walk away... very few people are actually interested in dealing with these old cars.. not likely someone local is going to be bidding against you....
and he can take it or leave it...
That is pretty high to me given the work you know it is going to need...
but if I was rich... having a really nice body to start with might be worth it...

I also think that's way too high for 325k, even up here in Seattle where diesels (wagons especially) fetch a premium. I recently picked up a two-owener 85 SD with ABS and all the service records since day one for $1600, sure it needed a few little things but now it's pretty much perfect with an additional $300 in parts and my time in labor.

Keep searching OP, you can find a much better deal out there if you are patient.

You don't give a location- and that's half the value consideration right there. Seattle will cost more than New York, and both will cost more than Florida.

Wow, I feel bad even offering that to him based on his asking price. I don't want to insult anyone....Is that the max you would feel comfortable spending on the car?

Thanks for the help!

I agree. Probably a low-ball figure in socal (for a socal car), but the high mileage kills the price IMO. Car would likely fetch $7-$8K if it had half the mileage.

LOL, then you will never be bragging about really good deals you got...
if you do not use a weapon... only offer and wait... and they decide to sell.... that is just market economics... this is not a social interaction.. it is a potential car sale....and he can say no.... without fear of hurting your feelings...

Personally, I would never pay move than $2500 for a car with over 300K miles on it. I generally won't buy cars with over 135K miles for gas and 200K miles for diesels.

In your own interest, you should establish beforehand the most you would ever pay for that car. Offer less than that, counter up to your max in 1 or 2 steps, then give him your phone # and kind regards. If seller is upset, sorry, you love it but know your limits. In your head, plan on $2k for whatever comes up. Labor sounds high for someone who knows how to pull the engine, members here quote 2-3 out, 2-3 in Even at $100/hr shop rate, that's almost two days, but your stuck w/ someone who will actually start the job.

Prices are all over the map, it all comes down to up close inspection and condition. Even all of us with details about the rear main seal, pictures, etc cannot adequately price it IMO, even a ballpark is tough. Condition of suspension components at 300k+? Injectors rebuilt? Timing chain replaced (+tensioner and guide rail)? A/C working? Each one of these can add thousands +/- value to the car. Still have not heard location, that can also factor into thousands. Aside from that, good advice on here regarding negotiation. I wouldn't pay more than $2500 for that personally.

According to that log book, the owner has been using Havoline 5w-20 motor oil?? This is not a diesel rated oil! That's a thin lightweight oil for a high-revving 4 cylinder honda... not diesels... and definitely not turbocharged diesels.

Another page in the log book shows Castrol GTX 5w-30. This is also not a diesel rated oil.

I would walk away from this car just based on the random potpourri of non-diesel engine oils the seller has been using.
