Primer pump question
Is the pump that FastLane sells exactly the same as an OEM one from a MB dealership? If so, there's nothing I can do about it now, but when I have to replace it again, I'm definitely not going through the dealership. I can't believe how much I'm getting raped on the bill.
I'm going to start doing more of the mechanical work on my own. I refuse to pay such a high price for parts that don't seem like they should cost that much. |
How much is the dealer price? I think the only way to tell if they are the same (as in made in the same factory) is to have both side by side and look with a magnifying glass and a discerning eye.
I eliminated mine totally when I was chasing an air leak and am happy with the results. One less source of air leak to deal with. |
Dealer price is around $350. The Bosch unit via FastLane was only $20 something shipped.

$$$$$ NFW!
they must have replaced the primer AND the lift pump... it's STILL overpriced though... http://www.allpartsexpress.com/ShopByVehicle.epc?q=1983-MERCEDES--BENZ-300sd--/l5_3.0l_diesel_turbo-Fuel--Pumps&yearid=1983&makeid=MERCEDES+BENZ%40%40MERCEDES+BENZ%40%40X&engineid=1194027%40%40300SD+%2FL5_3 .0L_DIESEL_Turbo%40%40300SD&catid=Fuel+Pumps&subcatid=Fuel%20Pre%20Pump&mode=PA I get stuff from the dealer all the time. no way it's 2000% markup on that pump! |

I'm the last one to defend a dealer, but they had to of misquoted you. Probably gave you a price for the primer pump and primer pump "housing", or whatever it is that the primer pump attaches to...
Which reminds me, I've got a nifty Monark primer pump sitting in my garage. I bought it for the 240D, but the original wouldn't budge and still worked last filter change... |

@vstech Yes I believe you're correct. I believe it included everything that was in the link you posted. My mechanic must've felt it was better to replace the whole shebang. Car's now 26 years young, after all. |

The Bosch hand pumps are OK - though I've noticed that mine gets a bit stubborn after a bit of use. |
I imagine the bosh primer pumps are of Chinese manufacturer now. The last pair I got where sourced in China. Clearly marked bosh on the boxes. This is the finger plunger type that you do not unscrew to use. Black knob.

The Haynes manual is OK for doing regular maintenance, but when you do large jobs it leaves out multiple important steps. I was using it to remove the old automatic transmission in my wagon, the Haynes manual missed several steps to get the job done. The forum is what saved me...
I put a new style primer pump in. By stubborn i think he might mean it's hard to press down. It is more difficult to push down than the original style i used to have, but it doesn't leak diesel everywhere like the old one did! |

Note:This brand has a 16 mm threaded fitting, and comes with a 22 mm adapter. Can be used for models with either a 16 or 22 mm receptacle on the fuel pump. Fastlane: Diesel Primer Pump http://catalog.peachparts.com/item.wws?sku=W0133-1715211 . |

You push down it springs up You push down it springs up ...this carries on as it should for a while... You push down... ...it stays down and laughs at you... ...then it pops back up just when you reach for a hammer! Like I said stubborn. |
