Lining up bolts on fly wheel with TC

Any ideas on how to get the bolts on the flywheel to the TC to line up? Is the TC supposed to spin some what freely when the Transmission is bolted back on? Mine seems to be very tight with the fly wheel...

thanks

The key here is to get it as close as possible when putting the trans back on.

Then just use some flatheads or long bolts to spin the TC into place. (it can move, but not "freely")

I think that I got it lined up and the bolts in place before I tightened the bell housing to the engine. Try loosening the bell housing bolts and separating them by about a 1/4".

in most cars, not sure about MB, you can back the torque converter off a little and spin it to line up the bolts. If you cant then you did not get the torque converter in the transmission right. you should feel it line up and move into the tranny several times. If it is tight on the flex plate then you may damage something in the transmission if you tighten the bell, on a Ford it would ruin the fluid pump

Thanks for the replies,

Heres whats going on:

I already have the transmission bolted on tight to the bell housing, but I was stupid and didn't line up the bolts. :(

So I was able to rotate the TC a little using a screw driver and turning the engine over, but it has not gotten caught on something, most likely the raised bolt holes....

I already have everything on the transmission hooked up and I cannot loosen the top bell housing bolts with out dropping the transmission a little.

I hope I didn't mess anything up in there.

Should I undo everything and try to loosen the bell housing?

im not sure but sometimes the trans have a plug or something sticking out that needs to line up with a hole in the flex plate. I wish I knoew more about MB autos but I yanked mine out for a std. somebody will chime in, I would wait until you have a definative answer

I looked in my service disk, no transmission details. bump to top

You should be able to roll the torque converter around one way or the other enough to get the holes to line up.

How tight is it? On most automatics you have to spin or turn the torque converter until it drops in to the front pump drive. You perhaps better loosen the belhousing and verify it has seated if not sure.

Maybe mercedes is different but I would not know how as that front pump has to coupled. Wait for others to comment. I could be totally wrong. Do you remember seeing the torque converter drop in if you had it out? I have not installed one of their automatics.

I got it back together, I was able to rotate the TC the other way to get the bolts to line up.

As for the front pump, I hope it went in the right place, if not it wouldn't bolt back together right? When I was putting it back in I twisted it back and forth until it wouldn't go in any further.

I got everything back together but waiting on one part tomorrow, then I'll see if it drives....
