1983 Mercedes 300TD Value...Beautiful but high mileage.
Hello,
I recently came across this car and I am currently trying to get a price nailed down. The car has 325,000 miles with excellent maintenance. Tranny was replaced at about 280K. books to original owner. Driven daily. It is in extreemely nice condition. The car has a small leak from the rear main seal, this is what an independent mechanic has told me. I have called around and a couple shops will not touch it. The one very reputable shop in the area will handle the rear main seal to the tune of $1400.00 just for labor. He recommended getting a couple other things done while the engine was out and I was paying to get the seal replaced. The other option was the option of getting a lower mileage engine and installing it. How much do you think this will cost? How much do you think I should offer for the car. You can just keep up with a leak, unless you're a clean driveway fanatic. Trust me on this one. Rear main seal can be done in situ. I believe it is: Drop the tranny, raise the engine a few inches or so, drop the upper oil pan, replace the lower rear seal, lower the crankshaft assembly a touch, replace the upper rear seal, put it back together. Not sure what you do w/ the timing chain when you shift the crank.
I haven't but others in the community probably have and could offer support. Rear seal is $10 at this site. **************.com sells the ingredients & recipe combo. If you can follow a recipe to the letter, his engine repair (ignore the ones on SVO conversion) recipes seem good & complete. Your mechanic is probably thinking: Pull tranny & engine, remove tranny put engine on stand, drop upper pan, do main seal, reassemble & reinstall. 'While you're in there' repairs might be rod/crank bearings, front main seal. I'd value at about 60-75% KBB - repair cost ($1400 + 10*markup). Think 1200-1500, $2500 if you're in love and have to learn the hard way.

I think the consensus here is that the upper rear main seal cannot be replaced in situ. Recent thread about the rear main seal.

You decide. All hypothetical to me, I'm poor.
KBB value is usually high, prolly 5-6k. I've seen winter stored runners w/ pedigree & no drips in the NE, $4k. You'll be into your mechanic for 3 x $666 boat payments by the time he's done.

Mechanical things can be replaced..
sure looks like a clean body.... wagons are very pretty and rock solid out on the road when in good condition... This is your decision on the price... but they are not making any more of them...and the condition of most is getting worse by the year...

I paid $1500 recently for an 84 300SD with 311k and a relatively new engine. Interior excellent, some paint problems.
