VIN check worldwide

I've got my eye on a 300D:

VIN wdb12313010290773

how can I check this and it's transmission? I think it's a five speed, but the classic center will not allow me to check cars without a title/bill of sale etc.

I have to assume that is a pre-1983 model of car.
Because it is all numbers after wdb.
Which also means the wdb should not apply. The pre 1983 did not have wdb.

My 1980 is a 12313012 - the 13012 being auto 4 speed trans and 617 5 cylinder engine.

using the chart below position 7 and 8 would mean
left hand drive built in Germany, Manual transmission.

According to one website :
1960-1983Position 1-3 - model

Position 4-6 - chassis type & engine size designation

Position 7 - 1=LH Drive (made in Germany), 2=RH Drive (made in Germany), 5=LH Drive CKD, 6=RH Drive CKD (Complete Knocked Down, assemblied outsite Germany)

Position 8 - 0=Manual transmission ,1=Hydraulic clutch ,2= Automatic transmission

Position 9-14 - Construction serial number

...
I thought
123 => model
130 => body style only

Am I wrong?

(I got this information from www.febi.com)

Are you not able to drive it yourself? You can also sit in it and shift through the gears with the car not running, and see if there are 5 foward gears or only 4.
