OM616 / 617 nut and bolt references?
 

I realized that while i have my 616 on the floor i could get all new nuts and bolts! rather than trying to sit down and test a million things, I'm wondering if there is a list or if someone can tell me the thread specs?

seems like its really only 3 or 4 different types of nuts on the whole engine, and same with the bolts other than lengths which are easy to measure.

i tried searching but didn't find any kind of reference.

Most of the bolts are 8.8 strength - NOT INCLUDING HEAD BOLTS GET "REAL ONES"!!

I have found that Mercedes have a habit of using lengths that are hard to find - I've had to cut down a few bolts.

The short Allen head bolts for the upper oil pan and lower oil pan are M6 if I remember correctly. And you'll go a long way with a box each of M8 and M10 nuts and washers (spring and flat).

As for a definitive list? Even at the glacial pace of my rebuild I don't have the time for that!

Huh, timely post... I spent last night cleaning nuts and bolts in the kitchen. A lot of bolts are M10 x 1.5mm coarse thread. These are the larger nuts and bolts. The slightly smaller ones that you find sprinkled around the engine are M8 x 1.25mm pitch. In my case I decided to clean the bolts with solvent and a brass wire brush, since bolts have nothing internal. When it comes to nuts, they're harder to clean internally and they often show some signs of damage or rounding; I'm generally just going to replace nuts and washers with new ones.

You could invest in a Thread Gauge and one of those metal or plastic cards that has holes in it of various sizes and the diameter measurement on it.

I had missplaced my Metric Thread Gauge (it came with the cheapie metric Tap, my SAE Thread Gauge also came with a Tap Set) so I bought a combination Metric and SAE one on eBay; $12.45 Free Shipping.

The new Thread Gauge has more thread sizes on it then my other 2 combined do so it looks like it will be more useful.


Some of the Internet Parts Places will once in a while also give the size and thread pitch of the Bolts they sell. But, that will take a lot of searching.
