OM617 Turbo manufacturers

Does anyone have any info on what turbos were used by US market MB for each vehicle and year model 617's? I know Garrett (Air Research, right?) and KKK turbos were offered, but why does there seem to be no rhyme or reason as to which was used where and when? I have 2 identical SD's and one has a KKK while the other has a Garrett.

FWIW your 85 there is a good chance one of those is a replacement from trap/ox recall etc.

Only if it was Cali version, correct? Mine is Federal and has what appears to be a factory KKK. The same turbo is on my '84 engine. The only difference in the two is the ARV on the '85.

If yours doesnt have an ARV on an 85 it is a replacement. Maybe replacement engine?

I have my suspicions on if this was a replacement. Telltale sign is that the black paint is peeling off of the freeze plugs. How can I identify a MB reman? I saw a number casted into the block on the pass side that starts with "R617". Surely the R is not for "reman" as I am not familiar with the Kraut term for reman is. I am not sure if MB offered a warranty or pay reman with different casting numbers or not. Are there some good 617 casting number ID links this could be linked to? The turbo does have ARV and it is a Federal car.

Austauschen is the term. There is a way to tell but it does escape me now.

Thanks. It seems that there was an additional tag with an assigned serial number stuck to the pass side of the block. Mine doesn't have one, but does that line up with what you remember?

Got a parts car from klaus over the weekend. He is first class in my opinion. Drove to Raleigh, loaded it on the trailer, and drove home. The 1985 300D starts and runs great - a great donor for the SD. I noticed it has a Garrett on it too!

Thumbs up

My '84 300D I owned forever ago had the KKK. My SD has the Garrett. My SDL has a KKK, but most SDL I have seen and the one I scrapped had a Garrett.

I figure it was just what were available at the time.
