Do dealerships keep service records .....
for a certain length of time? When I bought my car, I brought it to the dealer who sold and maintained it. I didn't buy it from the dealer-some guy who bought it from the original owner figuring he'd flip it for a couple of bucks. Soon after I received a coupon in the mail for a free go-thru from the dealer, so I figured what the heck. While I was there, I asked about the previous recalls and repairs made to the car. The guy there said he couldn't check. Do they store records 5-10 yrs then that's it? I'd like to get some more info on the car. Anyone know?

The dealer should be able to check and run the VIN number.

I didn't ask the service techs, I asked the lady that handles the paperwork, and she printed and gave to me a pile of maintenance records from when it arrived first in 2001 up to when it stopped coming in 2005, and this was after the dealership had changed hands at least twice, so I think the short answer is yes, they should be able to hand you service info at least for the time they serviced it. I would bet that if they really tried they could get to all the service records even if at other dealerships. I have my service booklet for this car and I've thought about writing a personal letter to the dealerships that serviced the car before, and originating dealership asking for any service records they might have.

I thought the records for service were held in a central data bank. Whatever service was dealer preformed should be accesable from any dealer was perhaps my misteaken impression.

The dealer by me has never "been able" to recover records for my car, even though I have other hard copies of it being serviced there (and even purchased new there) from the 80's-on. They aren't too helpful unless you're looking to drop 80k on a new Benz, at least they never have been to me. I asked about the recall on the trap-ox on one of my 85's and they just hung up on me...three times in a row. Lame.

Well my 300D was serviced at the local Benz dealer and they have records but they would not give it to me because the previous info was on there so they only wanted to tell me what was done. It is against the law for them to tell me the previous owner name.

No, there is no "central data bank" of service records. Dealers have their own records for cars they have sold and serviced and that's it. They do not have access to the records of other dealerships. Remember, each dealership is independently owned and operated as a franchise, they are not owned and operated by Mercedes Benz.

I just did this the other day....i am interested in a certain car and it was maintained at the local dealership
they gave me records over the phone...but some older repairs were generic. example : a/c work, body work specifics: tie rod ends ,alignment....
