Have you ever sold a car on Ebay? May have to sell the 190d2.5td

Are there any pitfalls to doing this via eEbay? What's their cut? Are you required to take paypal?

The wife likes the SL better. The beloved diesel may have to go. She says having 3 cars is not normal.

Dang it. Love the cars, but love the wife more. Guess who wins?

I only sold two cars on E-bay.One went well. my only advice is get the winners deposit ASAP. In my case, I think they had maybe 72 hrs. or something like that to provide a deposit or pay in full after the bidding stops. The guy won mine on a friday evening and said he would be in town saturday morning to pick up car, so it sounded ok to me. Saturday morning he comes over looks at the car and says he'll think about it and drives off with out buying it. Two weeks later he calls me sheepishly and asks if it's still for sale, I tell it is, just not to him. Couple days later I sold it on craigslist for a few hundred more than I would have gotten from E-bay so it worked ok in the end.

I know theres people here with much more e-bay experience then me, but that was my negative experience.

I've sold countless vehicles... It's hit and miss, Try selling it here or on your local craigslist first. you'll be way ahead

Pitfalls are things like buyers backing out, payment issues, deposit issues, people seeing the car and deciding they don't want it anymore (so be very honest about the car). Paypal takes less of a cut at that high of a transfer (I think), and you are not required to accept paypal.

Given the list of your cars having three is quite sensible. You should calculate the cost of a rental car over three days vs the base cost of a comprehensive insurance plan.

I was thinking that, but didn`t want to say, glad you did.

Iam glad we have 3 vehicles, that run. sometimes 2 are down, and always good to have that extra one.

I have 2 82 Datsun Pickups, both diesel

and the 67 1 1/2 ton International Harvester flat bed truck

one of these days I`ll have them all running.

there were three HP ratings on the OM616...

1) Not much power
2) Even less power

I've sold a bunch, and knock on wood I've never had a problem. Key things to do:

Short deposit period. 48 hours.
Put a note that all bidders with less low or negative feedback contact you before bidding.
Be honest, and leave yourself open to independent inspections. Better yet, get an independent inspection done and report it with the auction.

I sold a Chevrolet Suburban and a Searay boat on Ebay.

At the time it was $40 to list, $40 if it sells - $80 total.

I had sellers pay in cash or bank transfer before arriving.

Worked out both times.
Be very honest, post lots of pictures.

I have two friends that bought on Ebay no problems.
Even my 1983 300SD is from Ebay.....

Although I also recommend Craiglist.org and see how yo do with no fee selling.

I've sold several cars on ebay. Fees are high, and they're based in part on the final sale price. Expect the fees to be between $100 and $200. That said, you'll get top dollar on ebay, and don't have to deal with hagglers, tire-kickers, and joy-riding teenagers. The down side is dealing with a flaky buyer. Sometimes people will bid and win, but then change their mind or not have the means to pay. Now you're stuck with sales fees for something that didn't actually sell. (Ebay won't give you a full refund- they'll give you a partial refund, and only as an ebay credit, not actual cash refund).

To secure a high sale price, take lots of photos. Lots. From all different angles. These need to be good quality, properly focused photos with a real camera. Not blurry crap camera phone pics. Also offer to pick the winning bidder up from the local airport. Also, write up a detailed comprehensive description of the car and its major components, noting any major recent repairs or service.

As for payment, you can require a deposit ($250 or $500 or some such) via paypal at the end of the auction. The rest is paid by the buyer at pick up time. Unless they are paying in cash, do NOT give them the title when they pick the car up! Give them a signed notarized bill of sale, and a COPY of the title. Fedex the original title to them only after the check clears the bank. (Cashiers checks and money orders are too easy to forge these days). Spell everything out, all the details of the deal with the winner ahead of time, so there's no surprises or missed expectations. This is how I've always done it, and never had a problem.

On top of all the payment advice above,

Embed a youtube video of the vehicle running and a walk around, as well as pictures. People love seeing the car start up and drive around. Ive done that a bunch of times, generated far more in the way of bidding. People are way more comfortable bidding on something that has demonstrated evidence of running, and they can also get a feel for the sound and health of the car. Priceless addition to any auction IMO

Only other thing is I had a problem with some kind of bot or false user hitting my buy it now button a couple times. I would recommend against putting a buy it now.

Ebay fees are not too bad when you consider the size of the audience you can reach with your auction.
