Car shutting off while driving

Hi all,

Recently, my 1985 300TD has been shutting off at times when I let off the gas while driving. I was wondering what might cause this, and how I could go about fixing it.

Thank you,

Bryan

When was the last time you changed your fuel filters?

Too much crankcase pressure will also shut you off. Too much crankcase pressure will push the Vacuum Shutoff Diaphragm towards shutoff.

Try cleaning out your Crank Case Breather tubing. Or, if you do not mind the mess try a drive with out the Tubing on and see if the problem goes away.

It also could be related to the Fuel Supply/Lift Pump and Pressure Relief/Overflow Valve not keeping the fuel supply pressure high enough at lower rpms.
Along with the above is your idle speed 800-850 rpms?

Valve Adjustment?

Vent in fuel tank might be blocked. You then build vaccum in the tank until fuel supply by the lift pump is marginal.

Just run with the fuel cap loose or get out and remove it when the car quits. Large whoosh of air going in is the indicator. Just something else cheap and easy to check. Probably is not your issue. The clue usually is you have to drive quite a distance before the car quits.
