REWARD!! (1983 240 auto)

A friend just bought the finest example of a 123 I have seen in person, pics don't do it justice.

He is having a shut off issue.

I've been around this block before and am stumped. Vac pump measures 21.5 inHg. New ignition vac switch, (works) new shut off actuator (works). All connections good, even at the ignition switch.

Will not shut off with the key.

BUT, when he connects a mity-vac on the brown line under hood with the key turned off and pulls vac, it shuts off.

I'll think VERY highly of the person that solves this.

test #1--put a mity vac in-line with the shut off valve and see what happens when the key is turned off.

>New ignition vac switch, (works)<

How do you know it works, if it won`t shut off with the key?
You might have the vacuum lines switched at the vac switch.

>All connections good, even at the ignition switch.<

Maybe one of the rubber vacuum hoses are cracked that the brown line connects to.

Are you connecting the Mity-Vac to the shut off actuator, or the brown line going to the vac switch at the steering lock?

There could be a blockage where the brown line gets it vacuum at the large black line from the vac pump.

Well if the vaccum switch on the ignition is good. Not only working actually but new as well your post indicates. You have to find the vaccum supply feed for the switch. There will be little or no vacuum on it. Just keep working backwards until you find the vacuum. Or the reason you are not getting it. Something could simply be disconnected or leaking too much.

I assume the power brakes and door locks are working. So the primary vacuum source is still working.

Thumbs up Answer

The two vacuum lines are reversed on the new shut off switch.

Swap them and it should work.

This is the general consensus and I'll inform my friend.

I "know" it works, as one of the tests was to pull vacuum with a mity-vac on the brown line and feel for anything at the brown/purple line, got vacuum, so the circuit was open. This "confirmed" a working switch.

I didn't think about the reversed lines, you'd think a mechanic can reposition two lines without crossing them up.

sd, yes, I saw that too.

Thanks to all, much appreciated.

this totally blows my mind... how can reversing a vacuum switch have any effect?
is one side of the switch vented to atmo?
this would make sense... very odd though.
Roy, is there a reason the switch is vented?

The switch is vented so that when you turn the key to ON it releases the vacuum "stored" in the actuator in the pump and the lines between the switch and pump.

I was thinking the same thing. It must be some kind of 3 way switch with the possibilities of enclosed vacuum on both sides plus the option of vented on one side.

Swapping the lines did not solve the problem.

I've asked him to make a short video of the issue.

When he pulled vacuum on the brown line leading to the ignition switch (key off), it shut down.

This tells me the switch works properly.

When he checked for any vacuum on the end of the brown/violet line and turned the key off, no vacuum.

stc... I'm fond of the color myself, he bought it this past Sunday. I did shut down with the key, but took several seconds, now it won't shut of at all.

No clouding on the window/door trim, just a gorgeous example, with all of 60k miles, I believe it.

Block or kink in the line going to the key switch?
