Fuel Filters on Vac Lines?

Hi, saw a pic of a forum member's car with fuel filters installed inline on vaccum lines in engine compartment -seems like a good idea as you would notice a failing vacuum pump quickly by noting oil in fuel filter yes? How many members are doing this? Smart!

I've seen it done on MANY cars I service, and plenty on here as well. it's a cool little trick.

Is that what the straight fuel filter attached to vacuum lines in my engine is? Weird. Was wondering about that.

Have them on all of ours. Have caught a shutoff valve failure on two of them so far.

I can't speak for your vehicle but in mine the filter is in front of the battery and appears to be on a vent line.

There is one on the passenger side on a vent line not at the end of the line. If you add one you want to place it in front of the vac pump, it sucks towards it. Think of the hose as a straw with the vac pump being the mouth. (That sentence reminds me of a joke concerning a 50 foot garden hose and a golf ball.) ,) I digress. I put one on my 602 just in front of the pump. So far so good.

There is merit in this. I have often been concerned about the air flowing through the vac system. Over here my cars spend much of their life on dusty dirt roads. The old 300D (now parts car) had its vac pump discharge going into the air cleaner. Though I never found any dust in it, I was always concerned about it given how much dust there was accumulated every place on the car.
My newer 300D & the 2.5 both have internal ventilation of the vac pump, so unfiltered air goes into the crankcase. While I have never seen a build up of dust or oily mud, it does concern me. Maybe I will place a filter on the main vac line just before the vac pump & on the small line that also comes out of the pump.

so direction of the fuel filters is important too -follow the arrows that show flow direction on the outer casing of the fuel filter
