1985 300SD Posible Engine change

For pre-troubleshooting plan I was wondering where I can get a re-built engine for my 85 300SD. I would like to get a long block to replace the current engine, which I feel is internally damaged beyond what I care to tackle on to re-built and just find a replacement engine.

You will pay dearly for it - http://www.mercedesengines.net/ I believe is the most widely used source for rebuilt engines. You're much better off finding a good used unit for much much less money, just make sure to do a compression test before buying.

EDIT: I apologize, I didn't have the correct link for Metric Motors. I've corrected it

Metric Motors, for one resource for a re-built engine. Have a lot of money!

This is the correct site. Even though I changed the link in my post, I guess it didn't change the code at all and still led to the incorrect link . Thank you for posting the correct link!

understand you can likely buy 2 great running SD's for the price of a metric motors long block...

Thank you for the great inputs. I've done some research, I agree finding a well maintain car will be the better route to take. Just to entertain an idea. Can someone help me with the total weight of the engine? I have a major mod running through my head, which I might follow through if all the parameters managable.

I recently put a reman engine from adsit in my 300D (about $4500 plus core, plus shipping, plus labor). I've done the used engine thing.... Never again.

yeah, I'm not recommending getting a used engine, I'm just saying, a metric motors reman long block is going to be equal in price to purchasing TWO decent condition fully running test driven SD's... adsit remans are, lets say cheaper... less expensive that is. craig will let us know how long that lasts, as he puts TONS of miles on his vehicle a month.
(which is actually very good for a motor)
a long block should weigh in dry at about 600 lbs.

I've seen plenty of cars that run perfectly fine @ 200-300K. As long as they are readily available, I wouldn't hesitate to install their engine. Caveat is that I can see the engine run and perform a leakdown test before install.

If anything just get the head remanned, much cheaper and likely to the source of any compression issues. Leak down tests of course..

Did your HHO system put out too much power and destroyed the engine???

You had to go there. so much and had the engine efficient to where it was getting consistant 32mpg city. after talking with the previous owner last night. He revealed to me that he was hearing the same noise before I got it from him. He also kept a mileage log, since the odometer stop working he logged the approximate miles he drove it to and from work. He calculated he put 175K since the odometer stopped working, which was showing 155K. so, not knowing much how long these engine last, I think 300K plus miles on it has revealed it's ages.

Going to pull engine and take it apart, mainly to verify the affect the HHO had on cleaning any carbon build up. Hopefully I a top hald will be the only replacement I need. If not, I assisted a friend years ago to install a 350 in one, maybe I'll do that or just part it out and just focus on complete the re-build on my 72 LT1.

Thank you for the inputs.

You will want to do diagnosis before pulling engine. at least leakdown & compression.
