windage tray
its hard to see the pump screen in the picture but one should be able to inspect the oil pan for signs of scuffing around the pump pick up area to determine if any loose parts have been there.(if screw and washer has been there, they rotate around and draw a circle on the pan) once the washer spins off the screw it goes to the center of the screen and spins till it wears the screen, then the gear drive pump locks. in hind sight a simple convex screen instead of concaved desigh would help save these engines.
if anyone ever needs i do have sleeves that fit these engines that allows you to sleeve it for the the 3liter piston. larry perkins |

There Larry is.
Thanks Larry! It is good to know someone cares enough about the unloved 3.5 that they have figured out some great fixes for them!

Judging from the bore separation distance being so small in comparison to the three litre block. I would probably opt out for the three litre short block still. Hopefully this knowledge will help some members out in the future as well. Great post Larry. Nice to see you back on as well. |

Debris found in oil pan!
I can't believe this engine was running as well as it did with all of this in the pan! Most of the metal is Al. from the base of the 2 spray jets. My repair path will be new oil pump, 2 new spray jets, check rods & mains, clean the oil cooler, updated windage tray, and put her back together. The piston skirt pieces are about 1/4 the size of a quarter. There are no visible signs of scoring/scratches in either cylinder. Looking back, my first warning sign was in October of 2010. When I serviced the engine, upon start up, I did hear a metallic "clunk" on start up. I thought that was the timing chain slapping the tensioner/cover. That is when I first posted lower oil pressure at idle questions. I truly believe this condition existed before then, and has progressively gotten worse. The car has run every day from that service until now without any noises or other signs of problems except low oil pressure at idle. |

That is quite the collection. You may have set some undesireable record with it.

Vaccum pump thoughts?
Larry,
Do you suggest the vaccum pump for the reason of debris lodged or am I missing something? |

Wow
With that much debris in the pan I can't see fixing it. The 3L bottom end is pretty much a sure fix. You won't be happy with the price of the engine parts like pistons they are super expensive pretty much prohibitive. Just my opinion. Cheers Dan

first thing that poped out to me was the two ball bearings, believe they had to come from the bearing in side the vac pump.

ok,sorry for the scare on the vac pump, ball bearings are too small, they came from the check system(ball and spring) inside the piston oiler.
i do always look at the bearings inside the vac pump, and always have had to replace with new style that has sealed bearings.(for my comfort zone) larry perkins |

If the engine is going to be reliable or not pretty well depends on attempting to accumulate miles. Personally I see no reason not to attempt it. You have nothing to lose as rebuilding this block over installing a used 3 litre lower block is not money well spent in my opinion.
I would hunt around for a good 3 litre lower block and keep it as a spare anyways. Even if you never land up needing it. Much easier to take your time and locate one when not needed. Plus at some point in the future it is resaleable if never used yourself. Just make sure it is still in a vehicle and you do compression checks etc and hear it running before purchase. Engines out of cars and not runnable I equate with boat anchors unless I know the individual extremely well. |

The screen on the oil pump is pretty fine compared to most of the steel parts, so the two balls, two springs, and all washers/bolts will need to be accounted for or could show up again.
My car also had the spring, ball, bolt, and washer from the crushed oil-jet in the pan, didn't seem to find their way to the oil pickup.
