1982 300Sd electrical no start problem, help!

Hello Forum, this one is weird! The other day, I sensed my battery getting weaker and had noticed that when I turned the ignition switch there seemed to be no contact but car started(contact made) after turning key off and on a few times (this happened to me with the last starter I replaced as I had a bad solenoid) So I drove on, parked car and then car would not start at all, no contact to starter BUT, car could be jumped to start which got me home. I measured 11.3 volts at battery and thought perhaps battery was going so put another battery in measuring 12.6 volts and when I turned key nothing but a strange groaning sound, almost like air being released from a bag -weird!Does this scenario sound familar to anyone? Why would I be able to jump car but not be able to complete circuit normally via ignition switch even with fully charged battery?

Have you checked all your ground connections? there is a ground from the engine to the body, make sure it has a clean contact surface and is tight.

battery connections at the battery and the ground from battery to body. there could be corrosion up in the battery cable under the plastic covering.

When you tried to start it, was it making any sound at all? Was it dead quiet, or did you say it was groaning, (like a dead battery?) The reason I ask is that I didn't know for a long time that when I try to start mine and it doesn't start, that not only do I have to turn the key all the way back to the "stop" point, but the key has to be pulled out of the switch tumbler before it will engage again. First time it happened to me, I was really bumming out because I thought "Not another problem to figure out!" It started again, but I didn't know why, or what made it not start until I read somebody's post on here that said you have to pull the key out of the ignition before you try it again. I'd never had a car that needed the key removed before. Don't know if that's your problem, but it sure stumped me when mine did it.

electrical no start problem

Could be your neutral switch is not making contact try jiggleing it as your turning the key and see if it turns over.

The W123 has the block on the left fender by the battery with three screws under the lid. the SD has one also on the same fender, (location is a little different) just jump across 2 of the screws (one of the big screws to the small one) and this will by-pass the NSS.

turn key on, set parking brake, have shifter in park, jump across the screws and she should start.

NONE of the mb's I've got have needed me to remove the key to restart the car.
you do have to turn the key back to the insertion position before attempting to start again, but key removal is NOT required on any I have tried.
and I have a LOT of MB's...

"IT"
being the shifter lever either in N position, or P position. on one of mine, I have to push hard forward and to the right to get the NSS to let the car start... GOTTA REPLACE THOSE BUSHINGS!!! (phil, I'm waiting...)

Thanks, bushings have been done but you never know, could just be the NSS! I will check tomorrow! Thanks!
