Engine difference between 1985 Calif and Federal 300D

I know that the Calif. 300D engines had the trap oxidiser and the Federal engines were the same as 1984 engines. Is there a HP rating difference? I am looking at an '85 donor car for my 240D repower. I have the earlier intake, turbo and exhaust manifold to exchange with the '85 engine.
Are there ANY engine INTERNALS or INJ pump differences that made them Calif smog legal?

I'm under the impression the differences are exhaust related only.

The upper oil pan just doesn`t have the hole for the oil drain tube.

The IP has a box on the back side of it. it is the rack position sensor, and sends a signal to the EGR box behind the pass kick panel. it can be ignored.

the adaptor plate has a place on the drivers side for the tack pick up cable, maybe this could be used to install a tach in your 240. Funola added one to his 83 240, but it is set up with it`s own EGR control box.

is your 240 auto, or stick. the hole in the end of the crank for the 85, and maybe the 84? is a different size for a pilot bearing.

except for the cali crap added, it is still a 617.952 engine.

Looking through all my 4-spd swap notes, TOMJ was working through the pillot bearing ussue.
www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=76297

I know he tried to make a bushing the pilot bearing would press into. but later didn`t work out too well.

send him a PM and see how he worked through this. he is still around as far as I know.

I think just having a brass bushing made for the hole would work ok. It is just to keep the end of the injup shaft ligned up. My 82 Datsun PU uses a bushing, and has worked for the past 29 yrs.

I wouldn`t pass up the engine though.

Thanks guys...
charmalu, do you mean that the '85 Cali engine doesn't have the turbo drain or the air filter drain hole? My 240 is an automatic. I have a factory rebuilt (has the little tag on the side)automatic that was in an '83 300D. It is in great shape. I do also have a complete 4 spd set-up but you pointing out the pilot bearing issue will definitely have me going with the automatic.

The turbo has the oil drain. It does not have the drain from the air cleaner to the pan.

the cali 85 has the air cleaner behind the R/F headlight. the tube from the valve cover goes to the top of the filter lid, but there is a "Y" in the hose, and it drains into the turbo intake hose. what is left over goes into the air filter housing and make a mess.

I was told by my indy, that the pan can be drilled and a tube placed into it like the Fed set up.

why not just have a bushing made at a machine shop on a lathe. take the engine and manual trans and have the machinest measure and turn one.

I lucked out on my 85, the engine Metric Motors built used an older crank, and the pilot bearing fit right in .

scroll down through these pictures, this is a Cali engine

My 1985 300D (Pics, finally)

be sure to send all Royalty payments to "Frankengrant" for using his pictures.
