Wheel studs drooling

84 300SD.
In the photo you can see where something has seeped from the wheel bolts while driving. The material has etched the aluminum slightly and the remaining stains along side the etch will not come off. Have you seen this before?

My 89 300E used to get something similar if I did not rinse the lug nut recesses after cleaning. But it looks like the wheels need to be painted or polished anyway.

Is it happening to all the wheels or just one? I would check for a brake fluid leak. I had a caliper seal fail and it coated the inside of my wheel with brake fluid that deposited a little brake fluid on the face of my wheel. I removed it before it ate the finish off the wheel.
Or, have the wheel studs recently been greased or treated with anti-seize. I had an INDY work on my car recently and he greased the stud threads. I had an oily stain on two wheels similar to yours.

Do you have cats? I caught a neighbor's cat spraying one of the wheels on my Benz. If left long enough, cat pi$$ will corrode just about anything.

If its eating the finish, might be brake fluid...

After I run my car hard (track, auto-x, or canyon runs), the little holes will have bearing grease running from them...

I have those wheels for my snow tires and every one of them looks like that. My guess would be that some one got alittle to ambitious with the antisieze on the lug bolts. That combind with some break dust. Not being a huge fan of that style wheel I never botherred to clean them to see if it comes off.

Don't think grease or anti-seize or anything is recommended on stud threads. Put 'em in dry.

As far as the wetness, take the wheel off and find out.

The car came to me that way. I have had the wheels and drums off to do shoes and pads and couldn't see anything wet or oily. Only happened on two studs and the studs are dry. I may have happened some time ago.
Thanks for the input guys.

You must be VERY FAST !!!

Most of the paint on the lower three drawers of a rollaround tool chest fell off due to this.
That cat was walking out of my shop once and I grabbed something and threw it at him... ( I was a pitcher in Little League ) .. and hit him in the head. He keeled over on the spot. So I started looking for a box to put him into to dispose of him. When I was heading over to pick him up he stood up and continued walking the same way he was going before his ' nap '. Just as if nothing had happened.
