85 300 TD Glow Plugs
 

I was wondering what recommendations ya'll would have on glow plugs.

When I start the wagon it has a little skip to it until it is warmed up. The glow plug light sometimes comes on for a brief second and sometimes does not come on at all. I just wait about 10 seconds and then it starts fine but has a little miss. I think it won't hurt to change the glow plugs. I see prices all over the board and was wondering which plug is perferred and any other insight will be appreciated.

The general consensus is that Bosch and Beru Glow Plugs are the only ones that hold up well. The Beru Glow plugs cost more and are harder to find. The Bosch Glow Plugs are easier to find and entirely adequate.

No matter which plugs you buy you should Ream (there a Glow Plug Reamer for that) or other wise clean the Carbon out of the Holes as it will help them to last longer.

As far as prices go you need to shop around. Find a seller that has a good price on the item and has free shipping if you purchase over a certain amount from them. Buy, something like an Oil Filter to meet or exceed that amount and get the free shipping.

Also if you have not noticed you can keep you Glow Plugs on longer by leaving the Key in the Preglow position even after the Glow Plug Light goes out and can glow for about 20 more seconds. You will hear the Relay click when it shuts off.

Put some Never-seeze type compond on the Threads of the Glow Plug so it will unscrew easier the next time they are removed.

I thought at first that the bulb was burned out but it maybe just a bad glow plug. I have a friend with a 85 wagon and he has the same syptoms but his light stays on it might just be an 85 thing but I don't think it will hurt to change them anyway.

That glow plug light ALWAYS acted that way. A quick flash is all you get, regardless of glow plug condition. The relay is on, just not the light.
You just need to check their resistance, and/or pull them out, supply 12 volts DC to them and watch for a really completely glowed tip. You can visually tell the difference.
They were all working recently, but it has been a really long time since I'd had them out, so maybe one is working, just weak.

When I first got my Car I thought that the Glow Plug light indicated how long the Glow Plug Relay would stay on.
Later I found out that is not true; the Light is only a guide to give you some indication when you can attempt to start + the bit of a diagnostic feature. The Light does not control the Relay.

On mine the light is on about 10 seconds and if the Key is kept in the Preglow position the Relay remains on for about 20 more seconds. 10seconds + 20 seconds = 30 a total time the Relay is on until it times out.
If you want to Preglow longer; cycle the key and start over.
