79sd window motor chatter

i just put new regulator in my drivers door, before completely installing i joined motor and regulator together ,and tested action.

one direction motor is smooth, other direction i get chatter from motor gears.

does this mean i need a new motor ?teeth worn out ?they look ok

installing motor and regulator is a big job on the 116 drivers door, requiring removal of window guide etc,so i want to get it right before i finally install in door.

I doubt if the external Motor Gear is worn. On mine the Motor Gear Teeth seemed to be made of hardened Steel.

Perhaps it is the Gear inside of the Motor.

Or maybe something is binding in the area that the Window tracks in.

Somewhere in the DIY section some one has pics of a window motor taken apart.

thanks,i havent installed in door yet, just running to make sure its ok,but as i posted there is gear chatter in one direction, yes ,perhaps internal problem as teeth engage well in one direction, shouldnt be different,i ll look to see if its hanging up somewhere, ill run it with attachment to regulator and see what happens, maybe under load its different.

Maybe you could use something like a Mechanics Stethoscope or a stick against the motor to listen and see where the chattering sound is coming from.

i looked at "new regulator",its bent, cheaply made ,sprockets loose, rotaion in one direction is good, reverse and sprockets do not run true and lose correct teeth alighnment, thats the problem, motor is fine.i got the regulator at another mbz site-shoulda known better.the way to go is get a used one,as they are still better made than any reproduction.

at least ive gained a bit of knowledge as to r+r front door reg and motor, different than 123 or 126

If the Makers Name was on the packaging or part plese include it in the below thread. We need the Maker, country it was made in and type of problem you had with the part.

I noticed that for the front Window Regulators Dorman (for W123s) is one of the Makers I have seen being sold. Is it a Dorman Product?

Ditto on the hardened drive gear. Make sure the opposing teflon slides are in place (& greased) between the toothed regulator arm and the bracket near where the drive gear sits. You can pull the old ones off the old regulator. The regulator also will work better with the weight of the window on it once installed.

i put regulator into vice and slightly straightened it out, then installed, greased, works well.

if i had gone with used, there still is the issue of replacing slides.mbz had a hard time finding those parts for me.

nice to have a smooth window again.
