Not much Sprinter knowledge here. It would be helpful if you included the engine number so people with similar engines in other vehicles might be able to help.
It sounds to me as if the lift pump has failed or something else which has stopped fuel flow to the engine such as the shut off valve not releasing. Spraying easy start into the engine could be very unhealthy for the engine depending on exactly what engine it is.

You sort of answered the question when it ran on the Spray and dies when it runs out. Spray= Fuel; No Spray = No Fuel meaning as Kerry said you are not getting Fuel from your Fuel System (Fuel Supply or Fuel Injection parts).

The most likely cause is your Fuel Filter/s is/are Plugged. Change them if for no othere reason than to eliminate them as a source of the problem. If you have a Spin-on type Fuel Filter fill it up as much as you can with clean Diesel Fuel before you install it.
This will decrease the amount of time you will need to Crank the Engine.

Depending on the device that shuts off your Engine that could also be a cause.
Example: My Volvo Diesel has a small Solenoid that shuts the Fuel off when the Voltage is cut off and that shuts down the Engine. It allows Fuel in when it has Voltage. If it did not work I would not get Fuel.

Could it be that your Fuel Gauge is not working right and you are out of Fuel?

You might as well give all the info. Year Model and so on.

I think the model is a 312d. This means the engine puts out 120hp. (and it's a 3 ton van) I don't know what engine that is unless it's a 617 turbo but I'm pretty sure MB put few if any 617 turbos in the Sprinter.

Bad glow plugs? That's a reach because once it starts running on ether, it should continue running on diesel even if the glow plugs are bad.

When you find out what is wrong please be sure to post the info so we can pass it on to the next person with the same problem.

Unhappy

Sprinters are beastly complicated vehicles. I think maybe it's because they are produced mainly as fleet vehicles and therefore are to be serviced by trained fleet mechanics and will shut down if even minor problems occur (negligent drivers can't drive them into the ground). As mentioned above, there are two excellent forums - Sprinter Source and Yahoo Sprinter. These forums are, for Sprinter owners, what this is for diesel MBs.
How do I know this? With the help of this forum I have successfully maintained and grown to love my old MB diesels. Last year I took the plunge and bought a Sprinter. I really like it, but man-o-man is it ever complicated.
