[QUOTE=vstech;2682630]it looks like the shaft has been pivoting... QUOTE]
Anthing that rotates is pivoting (around the center point of rotation). Did you mean the shaft is out of round? i.e. not pivoting around the center of rotation?

More pictures. First two are of the transmission end, second two are of the driveshaft end. The last is of the transmission yoke. The transmission yoke looks fine, thank god. The flex disk is definitely cracked, that's getting replaced. I like the dowel idea.

I mean the bolt hole itself is pivoting/rocking in position. ya gotta get the bolts to remain stable in place.

I guess that's the problem end. whunter has got a thread concerning the correct orientation of the flexdiscs - I guess if you don't have the recesses in the propshaft end then this is what happens?

So, I went and made a key to fit into where the hole is worn away. Not perfect, but a snug fit. I'm replacing the flex disc tomorrow and replacing all the nuts with new ones and I'm replacing the two allen head bolts just to be safe. I'm also gonna locktite the keyed bolt so there's really no chance of it working loose again. After that, I think I'm just gonna pray that I make it until May.

There is a pin in the center of the transmission-side yoke, which should fit nicely into the center-hole in the driveshaft yoke. If it is sloppy, that is part of your problem. It looks compromised in the photo.

DUDE
Replace the yoke, both of them, trans and driveshaft! All of the energy that moves your car goes through these parts. If they arent precisely fitted, all of the load will not be evenly distributed. IE one or two bolts will carry all of the torque from your engine. It will come loose. Diesel giant has a pictorial about what happens when a flex joint separates. Very very ugly. Besides your driveshaft is out now.

This is looking pretty bad.
The front yoke of the Driveshaft is going to be $220-$250 for a new one. And after that should the whole thing be balanced or not? The Flex Discs are $47 on up. The central guide piece is $55 on up I do not know anything about manual Transmissions and could not look up the Yoke for that. Of course the Yokes may be had at the Junk Yard. However, it does not look like anything can be done fast enough to get the Car on the Road for his School.

The ovaled hole area could be drilled and tapped for a threaded Rod or Bolt and the Bolt could be cut off so that it is the thickness of the Metal it replaces and a new correct sized Hole drilled for the Flex Disc Bolts. Some of that really good Thread Lock or Epoxy could keep the threaded piece from coming loose. He might be able to buy a new Front Driveshaft/Yoke for abut $250. I am not sure what a Machine Shop would charge but I am guessing it would be more. If he cannot pull another Driveshaft from a Junk Yard he might get on one of those internet Junk Yard Hot Lines and see what it would cost for one already Pulled from a local Junk Yard.

I just replaced my flex discs today. It was pretty simple and no damage done to my drive shaft considering the car would rattle and clank because the flex disc rubber deteriorated around the bolts. What I whole do is get some JB Weld (metal) and use that over the whole and then drill out a new whole to the appropriate size, hen you can use the bolt to create the new threads. Its not a permanent fix, but its something.....Also, be sure to get the correct flex discs. Not sure about your model type, but mine has 2 different discs for front and rear.

Does the driveshaft make a new home in the interior so to speak when the flex disc separates at speed?

It might. It will certainly flail around and beat the crap out of anything near it.
I have a dead tranny and numerous driveshafts lying about. If I knew the length needed I might have one that will work. Probably not but possible. Is the three eared piece on the ds removable? I could pull the parts off my stuff and probaby even find the correct bolts if I knew exactly what is needed.

Now don't let yourself get discouraged. I was young and poor when I was your age too. You'll get more comfortable by and by. In the mean time you are learning a lot of great stuff working on your great old car.
This forum offers a community of like thinking people who have been through it all before. When I was a pup it was just me and my dad and whatever half baked repair manual was available when it came to fixing things. Needless to say there was some serious jury rigging going on and it did not all work out well! When I was in college I ran my 1960 Simca nearly a year once with a dead generator because I was stymied as to how to fix it. I just put it on a charger every night and kept driving it. Heck it probably only needed brushes but I didn't know how to diagnose or fix it. I took it on a four hour trip on Christimas eve in the dark and wound up driving behind semis with no lights on until the engine would not run off the dying battery any more. Then I called ahead and my dad and brother in law came and brought a spare battery which dad set in my passenger foot well and ran jumpers through the vent window to the battery. I eventually was driving along the next spring and spotted a dead simca sitting next to a repair place in Indianapolis and bought the generator for 10 or 15 bucks and put it in and kept driving until the engine put a rod through the side of the block for the second time and then junked the car and got a valient with the indestructable slant six! LIfe without money sucks but later you have some fun stories to tell!

Also, the reason I'm upset about this is that I feel like it's my fault. Against the advice of others I decided to pull my perfectly good 616 for the 617a, which has just resulted in even more issues than I had to begin with. I've also noticed that structural belts are showing through on the inside of the front right tire, so I gotta put my spare on there and hope all the tires make it until the summer. So now, this summer, I've gotta rebuild the suspension, get it aligned and replace all the tires, then get back to work on patching the holes in the floor. Let's just say that the thought of junking the car has crossed my mind, and I love this car like a family member. And I've been thinking about if my parents weren't here to be loaning/giving me all this money to keep the beast going. It's just been bringing me down.
