81 om617 into a 76 300D

I have a 1981 om617 I want to put into my 1976 300d non turbo. It is also a om617, just a different year. What kind of problems might I run into??...Ed

get the glow plug harness, and it's a drop in exact replacement... unless it's from a wagon.

Check on the vacuum arrangement for shifting... there was a change between the 79 and 80 wagons which made my spare trans useless to TxBill a few years ago... neither of us knew to look at that criteria at the time... and you can not use year designation anyway on those changes... must use VIN numbers.... or sometimes it seems they say Month so and so in year X starts a particular change...
I should have asked.. are you taking the trans with the engine ' move' ? That would be good if you can do it...

Will a 123 617 drop into a 115? I don't think so. I think the 115 617 had the oil filter in a different location? Or is that just the 616 in the 115? In any case, the chassis or not the same so there may be issue other than just the glowplugs.

No it wont be a direct replacement. You will have to relocate the oil filter and change over the gp system to a pencil type system. The power steering and the A/C is different too. Its a turbo or NA?

Here's a recent thread on the subject =>

Swapping out an early OM617 for a later OM617

I bet, however, there are some better ones out there...

I was just about to post the same exact thing. You beat me to it!

I haven't gotten very far in my project.... Still waiting for the engine. I do think it is basically a bolt in project... The oil filters are different, as are the glow plugs.... And the a/c and power steering units may be located differently also.

If you didn't want to convert to the newer glow plug system, I imagine you could just use the GPs from your 115, correct?

Er no - the glow plugs in the W115 OM617 are different from the post 1980(ish) OM617s. They are not only a different size but they were updated from a series circuit to a parallel. So that's why the advice is to carry the glow plugs and the relay from the newer engine / car over to the W115...

As I recall the turbo hits the frame rail on the passenger side so the exhaust manifold would need to be modified as well.

Yes the newer glow plugs are an improvement over the older type. No argument there.

Is he getting the whole GP set up from the later engine?

If not, he still has his old relay, etc. I assume. Could he not just install his older type GPs in the newer engine, with his old relay/ignition? Are the threaded GP holes different on the later engine?

I think it could be done. Whether it is advisable or not, is another matter, correct?
