85 SD with transmission issues... 2nd gear start

OK, I'm buttoning up the car and test driving it out, odd 2nd gear start... at first I thought I adjusted the alda too tight, but it's just the 2nd start problem... I'm guessing the transmission got rebuilt in the past, and they put in a gasser VB... I read here somewhere that the k1 spring can be reversed or something, and that enables or disables the 1st gear start.
anybody got a link?

I think the trans in that car should rest in 2nd, but move off in 1st.

It starts in second gear. What happens after that depends on the load.

My 85 SD ALWAYS starts off in 1st gear, unless I come to a rolling stop - then it continues in 2nd.

I'll have to find the thread, there was a long discussion on it. The results were that the car rests in 2nd, but the moment you touch the throttle it goes to 1st.

The one where a lot of folks who initially insisted that their transmission started in first finally saw the light?

That is generally correct. But one can move off without touching the throttle, in which case the downshift to first won't occur. Either way, the start, however brief, was in second.

The 2-1 downshift in not terribly obvious in most cases. That leaves a lot of folks 100% sure that they are starting in first.

ok, well this car now NEVER starts in 1st. somebody waaay before me adjusted the alda for max fuel, and the soot is just amazing. I adjusted it back to spec, or as close as I could get, and it no longer blows black smoke, but pulling away in 2nd is a dog! when manually shifted to low, then popped into D, it is very spirited.
Soooooo, how can I change the VB to get the 1st gear start?
