What to look for when buying a w124 wagon

Im going to look at a w124 wagon (300te) and i was wondering what the best way to see if the sls is working right is? I plan to look over the pump and the accumulators to check for leaks. But the car can only be lot driven as of now so I really cant see how it rides. Also if they say that it burns 1qt of oil every 3000mi, is that a bad sign for the m103/104? Ive read that they had some valve problems?

Thanks,
zach

are you going to buy it? I think m103's leak more oil than they burn. Only way I can think of testing the sls is to load some people/stuff in the back and see if it pumps up.

For the SLS, go over a speed bump and see if its too bouncy.

it only "lot" drives.. which means they will not let it out of the parking lot.

Ashedd- I do think im going to buy it if I can get to it and if it appears to be in ok condition

The car has a bad wheel bearing and he says that it needs to be trailered.

The SLS is a great system but expensive to replace parts. Have a quick read through this - Self-Leveling-System - How it works, and troubleshooting the system
It will help you check out the SLS system when you look at one. The pumps and leveling valves are expensive to buy new, but are pretty durable parts. The pumps are rebuildable, the w124 valves are not rebuildable like the 123 valves are.

Hard bumps means ruptured spheres, really bouncy can also mean ruptured sphere(s) with gas in the damper (early stages of failure), open the SLS top to be sure it is pumping fluid out of the return, have someone sit on the rear with the engine running and ensure that it rises back up to ride height within a couple of minutes. Also check the dampers for oil, leaking = bad dampers (expensive).

If no leaks, self-levels okay, spheres aren't a deal-breaker, about $150 for the pair IIRC, four new crush-washers, and a new liter of fluid, a few hours of install time.
