Injection Pump Mounting Bolts OM617.910

I need to advance the injection pump timing on the 76 300D as its off by some degrees.

But I ran into a problem, I CANNOT seem get at the 13mm mounting bolt at the bottom of the pump. The oil filter housing gets in the way..

If anyone has ever done this before please post the combination of tools you used to get at that nut.

Thank you!

Stewart

Pictures of what, the injection pump, there is nothing different about my injection pump.

Its just that on W115's there is limited space, the oil filter housing is mounted from under the car. Its not like a 617.912 and later...

Any W115 owners adjusted their timing before?

Even though I have a manual for your Engine it is not very specific. They do show part of a pic of a "self made" 13mm wrench. Picture the Box end of a combination wrench with the Box end pointing at 12:00.
It showes the wrench bent Counter Clockwise about 1/4" back from the Box end at a 45 degree angle.
(The other issue is that that Bolt you are speaking of has a Nut on the other end so you need to double wrench it.)

This is also the same "self made" wrench they show for my later 617.952.

Keeping in mind that I do not have the same Engine; when I did mine I got under the Car and located the 2 Bolts that attatch that rear Bracket to the Block. I removed those 2 Bolts.
When I advanced the Fuel Injection Pump that Bracket moved away from the Block.

When I was done timing and the Front of the Fuel Injection Pump was tightend down I took a long punch and tapped the Bracket back against the Block and installed the 2 Bolts.

you need to buy a 1/4" drive 13mm universal that plus extention and remove front tire and go thru that area.have done many but it has been years.

diesel911, thank you i might have to bend a wrench if the procedure that neubob posted does not work.

neubob, thank you! I never really thought of doing it that way, i think it might work out okay. I already have all those tools.

X2 on modifying a spanner to tackle the inaccessibility of the 13mm nut at the back of the IP - I've come across it in one of the many FSM versions I've been flicking through - If I remember which one I'll post back here!

I haven't had a chance to bend a wrench yet like the manual suggests. Pierre told me to bend it 90 degrees.

I tried getting at it through the wheel well and i just cant get to it, the OM617 must have less room than a OM616.

Congrats Kevin, i was looking at your picstures in your thread! Good work!

On 617 all that is needed is an extra long 13mm and some blind work coming in from the top.

Below the Drawing is what is in the manual.

When I did a search the pic is what I came up with; the 90 degree one. And they said it was for getting at the bottom bolt.
Our forum sponsor sells Baum special tools and the number for the Baum injection pump wrench is H4561.

It might be normal automotive type obstruction wrenches would work. They are sort of U-shaped or S shaped; far right pic.

Hi,
I did this job years ago on my W115 300D. It is a PITA, but doable. I used a wrench as shown in the post above, the sorta "s" shaped type, and did it "blind" from above. I had tried all sorts of wrenches with no luck until I found that one.
Be patient, take your time... It is that one nut in particular that is the hardest to get... But you can do it.
As I recall, Mercedes also recommended that you buy a specially designed tool to measure the 'drip rate' of the injection pump... Priced at about 75 bucks, at the time. You can make it yourself if you have spare injection line... I just came across the one I made about 12 years ago when I did this job. I believe there is a 'how-to' for it somewhere on the Internet.

Yes some dealer prices can be shocking.

If someone does not want to make one it is a common item sold on eBay.

injection pump mounting bolts

i have never used a bent wrench. used the 1/4" 13mm universal w/ extension. if i remember took off front tire and squatted in wheel well area and was able to get in maybe around sub frame mount area. also would either adapt up to 3/8" to break free or had to add some kind of cheater bar to 1/4" to initial break free.i bought the 1/4" 13mm universal just for this job. my kids have subsequently lost it and i have not replaced because i have not had to do this type of job in a while. reguardless good luck!

Just curious how you are making out with the injection pump adjustment? Any luck?
