Oh damn, I lost my key. 1982 240d.

Last week I delivered my old truck to a guy in N. Carolina. I lost my other keyring somewhere between St. Louis and Wilmington and it had my only key to my recently-purchased 1982 240d. This key operated both the doors and ignition. I'm looking on the parts site here and I'm finding the ignition lock cylinder, which should be all I need there I think, but nothing for the doors. What should I do?

Thanks for looking, and here's a picture of my old truck running Highway 129 (tail of the dragon) on the delivery run.

If you have the title, you can go down to the dealer with the VIN and they'll have a new key made for your car. Last time I did it it was around $30. It will likely take a few days time for them to make it for you.

X2, go to the dealer. I just bought a tumbler and an extra key, $17 for the extra one. getting it from the dealer you will have the key cut for your Vin#. buying an after market key and/or tumbler will work. but if you loose that key, where are you going to get another one??? what is it keyed to? now you will have the fun and excitement of grind/drilling out the the old tumbler etc...

also the after market key will not lock/unlock the doors and trunk.

what year CornBinder? first yr of that model was 69. looks like a 1/2 ton with maybe tortion bar front suspention. I had a 64 C-1000, 266 V8 and 3 on the tree. later had dealer install a truck 4-spd & clutch. Total cost was $525. the new trans back then, was $365. think that was in 68. wish I had kept it.

My (former) binder is a 1974, first year of the mid-cycle refresh. The 1969 is visually very similar, but there are some key differences. For example, you can't take a 74/75 hood and put it on 69, it won't fit unless you replace the grill and fenders as well, not many folks know that, even in the IH scene.

Anyway my old truck there was a 1974 model 100, it has independent double-wishbone coil spring suspension on the front - a very fancy set-up for an International truck, and leafs in the back. It's powered by an AMC 401ci v8 engine, which I had rebuilt to a tune of roughly 360hp. This was the factory engine! After the rebuild the truck was stupid fast, especialy considering it's braking and steering ability. At least both were power-assisted. The transmission was a Chrysler 727 torq-flite with an AMC bolt-pattern and it all ran through a Dana44 rear end with 3.54:1 gears.

Thanks for the info on the dealership and VIN. Being an IH guy I'm really not used to the idea of going to a dealership to get parts.

Lets just say, this is ONE item you should get from the dealer.

The older Binders were the 266, 304 and 345 V8`s made by IHC. didn`t know they used the AMC engines, or Chrysler trans for that matter.

still have my 67 1 1/2 ton with the 345.

I'd love a truck like that with a 7.3 Power Stroke in it... Keep it IH all the way around.... Just a pipe dream I thought I'd share.

On the subject at hand, Its really quite amazing how well MB handles their keys. I needed one for (what use to be) my 74 240D. I went in there and the parts guy said 20.00 I ran out to my SD and grabbed the reg for the SD and got her a key also, also 20.00 got them both 5 days later like clock work.

Yeah a lot of folks are keen to think the IH 304 was an AMC, but it's an IH SV engine like the 266, 345 and 392. SV stood for "Small V8", but they were only small in comparison to IH MV and LV engines. An IH "sv" 266 dwarfs the AMC 401 in physical size. It's really quite something. IH also used the AMC straight sixes in their Scouts and a few pickups. The only AMC v8 they ever used was the 401, and only in 1973 and 1974, and only in Pickups and Travelalls.

Both AMC and International used the Chrysler TF727. AMC called it the Torque-Command I think. Not sure what IH called it, but Chrysler made one for each, with an AMC bolt-pattern for the AMC engines, and an IHC bolt-pattern for the IH engines.

I still have a 1976 Scout II with the IH 345ci v8, TF727, dana20 transfer case and Dana 44 axles with 3.54 gears in it. Here's a pic of it.

Anyway, on to my next problem. The previous owner had told me of my 240d that a key was lost inside of it at one point. With my key missing I went searching for it. Lifting up the carpets found the underside of the driver's side carpet soaked in oil. I'm assuming this is bad.

^ Sounds like either a failed shut off valve, clean up what you can and install a new one.

Or a problem with the oil pressure gauge.

More inspection on your part is necessary.

If it is engine oil from the gauge or the failed shutoff actuator diaphram, you will really have a mess to clean up. I had the gauge leak one time .

If it is the gauge, pull one from a junker at the yards. they are around $20.

the other thing that can make a mess under the carpet, is the Master Cylinder when it goes. then it is brake fluid.

That is a nice looking Scout. Don`t see them very often. towards the end of the production run, they installed the Nissan SD-33 Diesel engine. the last yr 80? it was the turbo engine.

I had a '74 200 4X4 with the 345 engine. It was one of the first PU's with front discs and a fully synchronized transmission. The body left a lot to be desired, as it started rusting almost as soon as I bought it. It got 7 MPG in local driving and had a 16 gallon fuel tank. Throw in the gas crisis at the time, and you had the range of a Nissan Leaf. The relocation of the engine that year also had its own set of problems, as it had a leaky oil pickup which led to collapsed valve lifters. Took me a while to figure that out. When they went from a front to rear sump, they skimped on the pickup assembly. In its defense, it was a true truck engine with forged crankshaft, valve seat inserts and rotators, machined combustion chambers and steel timing gears, no chain. Drank fuel like one too.

In 1978, I repowered it with a 3-53 and Clarke 282 VO transmission, and sold it for $7200.
