Monarks.
My EGR is disabled vacuum-wise. Of course it could be stuck open inside. Turbo spins smooth and nice, makes about 12 psi, as I set the wastegate and monitor it wth a gauge at WOT. Given all this , I had to wonder if it could be a timing issue... I believe flow is quite good. Again, I can easily get over 28 MPG, which is pretty good for a w123, IME.

I had smoky sooty starts on my 85 SD, reset the IP timing by drip method now it's "clean".

Yeah, Im leaning towards this. My TC stretch is as follows... Maybe it is contributing to timing being off?
That's like 4 degrees, right?

Ive been reading the FSM. 07.1-115 has an image of the harmonic balancer and the readings from it. Comparing what it shows as 24 degrees before 1st cylinder TDC, I would say that my stretch shows that the engine is currently timing at about 2-3 degrees delayed (it seems you use the midpoint on the pointy end of the pointing stick, not the long edge, right?). Would that be accurate?
Since my cam is set up to be properly aligned at what it believes is when the intake valve opens, the picture above shows that it is opening 2-3 degrees too early due to timing chain wear, right? Thanks!

Pull the air cleaner paper element before a cold start to see if any major change. Air filter may not be flowing well. Could be pump timing but you are getting optimum fuel milage. Still worth checking as a general rule anyways.
As for the stinkyness of a car. You have no ideal until some friends have had beer and pickled eggs well before getting a ride with you. |

Yeah, I was going to mention it all depends when I ate beans and any if I had any buttermilk with them.

Will do. The odd thing is that it still stinks after a good long, hard drive. Like after the 160 miles I drove last night, idling at the end it still stunk like at startup. I dont think that startup is out of the ordinary in fact. My others havent been as noticable, certainly not when full temperature. Have to wonder if the incurable idle shake (at least the rack dampener doesnt cure it) has to do with it. Slightly off timing Id think could do such a thing...

Something is getting to sound very odd here. Is oil dripping down on to the exhaust manifold and burning off? Diessel fumes are far from healthy and can make you sick.
I tore my exhaust off about the halfway point underneath while traversing the north shore of lake superior. They had removed the top of the paving leaving some holes in many places over a distance of several hundred miles. There was no place to deal with the exhaust that night on that highway. When I eventually got to a town with a muffler shop I noticed that I did not feel very well from the residual fumes that had entered the car over the many hours. Anytime you can smell fumes inside a diesel either try running the blower fan to keep positive pressure in the cabin or as you are doing locate the issue. This type of thing should not be lived with. |

No odor in the car at all ever. But outside it is strong, stronger than my other w123 cars.
