Electric Vacuum/Brake Booster Pump Tested

Several times a year someone asks if an Electric Vacuum Pump would work to supply the Vacuum.

I have found one that worked with no problems for the 45 minuets I drove around with it running. However, keep in mind this is a just a test. Everything was just jury rigged.

During the time of the test my Brakes worked normal even when I pumped the Brakes a bunch of times and my Transmission shifted the same.
I found the Vacuum Pump on eBay by searching Volvo and or Saab Vacuum Pump. When you do that you will come up with either the one in the below picture or the Black Plastic Vacuum Pumps used to operate the climate control and other accessories.
Some where on the Sticker you will find UP-28.

It appears to be a Vane Type Vacuum Pump. The Pump is made by Hella; made in Germany.
I have seen a similar pump made by Buhler.

I connected it by removing the front section of the main Vacuum Tubing and replacing it with 3/8" Hose. That allowd me to clamp the Hose to the Nipple on the U-28 Vacuum Pump.

While the amount of Vacuum Supplied seemed to be adequate the Pump gets hot enough to blister you. If you spit on it the spit drys in about 4 seconds; about as hot as a Radiator after a hard drive.
I do not know if it is normal for the Pump to get that hot.

Also I have no Vacuum Switch turn it off or on automatically. Places like Summit Racing sell those for around $30 each.

Also cost wise a new one is close to $300. The used ones on eBay are selling for around $60-$80. I lucked out and saw a new one on eBay for less than a used one and bought it.

I have not taken the time to look in Volvo or Saab manuals to find out if the Vacuum Pump is just made to be an assist to the Brake Booster Vacuum or made to do the whole job.

Due to the cost of a New Electric Vacuum Pump being close to the cost of a New Stock Vacuum Pump it becomes less interesting as a substitute. And, the heat issue that may mean it will not last long. So I can't say it is the answer if someone wants to replace the Mechanical one.

After the test I went back and put the Hose back on the Stock Vacuum Pump.

I will have to wait to get some sort of Vacuum Switch before more testing.
Also you cannot hear the Pump over the Engine noise.

Thanks for the info.
I have seen the one in the Pic (Swiss Made) back when I was looking up that sort of stuff.

I was actually trying to find a pump that might be able to be found in a Junk Yard on a regular bassis. The Volvo/Saab Vac Pump may be that pump.

The Comp Cam; Summit Racing types would most likely work also (however the EV sites said they were noisy.)

I made a mistake, the pump I have is made by Hella. I believe I have seen the same pump made by Buhler.
Now that I am looking the large tag has Hella on it and a smaller tag on the Motor has Buhler Motor GmbH so I guess Buhler makes the Motor.

Looks like I am wrong about the price also. The Parts Geek has them new for $162; Hella Vacuum Pump for 2001 Volvo S40

I am glad to seen this thread . I need to replace the vacuum pump on my 1990 W124 OM602 2.5 that still has the old style "time bomb" pump . The price of $350 or so for a quality euro made pump has gotten me to looking around at some lower cost options ( chi knock off or electric ). I saw some old posts about a high failure rate for those knockoffs so I would rather go electric . I could gut the pump (remove lever etc) an keep the casing to cover the hole and bypass it with one of the electric pumps ( find something at pick-a-part) .

(FWIW - another alternative vacuum pump thread -
Vacuum pump alternatives )

humpty bumpty

The previous owner replaced my vac pump within the last year something cheap, not sure what, I can't ID it, it has normal hex bolts on it. It runs fine but I assume its also a time bomb. I've been looking for an electric vac pump solution to eliminate the mechanical pump all together when another MB owner pointed out that Saab turbos from the 90s have an electric vac pump for the brake booster. I found this puppy hiding in the bumper behind the driver's side fog light of a a 2000 Saab 93. $9 at the JY and... oh look at that its a Pierburg.

Now I just need to get my hands on a vacuum switch, relay, some wiring, a couple of vacuum fittings and maybe a vacuum reservoir. I was thinking of also adding an LED to the dash or maybe a vac gauge to see when the pump is running.

You might go back and see if you can get the Vacuum Switch from the same Vehicle.

Excellent bargin on the Vac Pump.

I looked all over the Saab's engine bay and didn't see anything that looked like a vacuum switch. Maybe I missed it. I have found several vac switches in the Mcmaster catalog that will probably work. I would like to get an adjustable one with hysteresis so I can find the ideal setting.

Thread resurrection!

I would like to do this conversion to a Hella UP-28 electric vacuum pump. But I could use some advice. Could anyone point me in the direction of what I would need to do to hook up a vacuum switch so it's not on all the time? Any recommendations of a specific switch that would be good?

My cruise control actuator doesn't work so I was thinking of removing that and installing it around there. I could also easily use the electric hookup for the actuator. That would work, right?

Would love to hear from anyone who has done this. Thanks!

I think there is a thread where one person is using that V Pump in an a non Mercedes Vehilce that he put a Mercedes Engine into.

The key is the Vacuum Shutoff Switch. Someone also posted the Vacuum Shutoff Switch that they used but I don't remember the Thread or who.
