Mer-Chev?

I have a spare 2.2L from my old 190d-- and a chance to buy a 2wd s-10 with a blown motor (you see where this is going).

Someone was posting a project like this on the internet a few year ago but lost interest--so is it possible to mush the two together and get a high mpg pickup?

I drive a newer gasser s-10 but the mileage isnt all that great. The older s10s had a long bed, which is nice. Not a lot of torque (what you want in the snow). And theres that spare motor rotting away in my barn.... I think the easy way out would be to put the auto trans in the truck and flail away.

I haven't read about anyone doing that with a 2.2l engine but here's a link to a guy using a 240d's engine in an s10-

I had an 84 190d for a few years, man that was a slow car. My 300TD felt like a racecar when i got it... I guess since you have the cars it might be a fun swap, but I'm thinking it's going to be pretty slow. Maybe you can do some performance mods to get it up to snuff.

Thats the video I saw. He never got past taking things apart. The speed part isnt an issue since Im usually not in a hurry anyway. Youre right about the slow The 2.2l is not only not fast, its really a dog dressed up like a car.

The S-10 came from factory with 140 ft lbs while the om601 has only 92 ft lbs of torque.
So that sounds like quite a dropoff.... theres not a lot of stop lights in my world, so off the line speed isnt really important. Mileage, on the other hand, is a big deal.

The 190D i had i bought with a Greasecar conversion in it. I logged probably 30k on grease while i had it. The 2.2l ran quite well on it, might be another way for you to boost mpg's. Pickups are real easy to put nice tanks in, veggietanks plus in SD makes reasonable well built tanks

He makes decent tanks I see, but he sure does not know anything about plastics. Polyethylene comes in hundreds of varieties for different applications, I see his point about PEX plumbing tubing, but ive been using a high temp rated plastic fuel tank for years, and love it far more than metal, nothing builds up on it and heat does not affect it.

Diesel S-10 is a great idea! I was going to do that as well, but am working on doing it to my van, that has the same drivetrain as an S-10. People have definitely done it. Would be a worthy project.

Over on the TDI page, there is an incredibly interesting thread where someone mounted a 1.9 VW TDI in a ranger with a lot of good pics. You should check it out for inspiration towards starting this project!
