MB's fuel filter placement is so good you can change it by moonlight.
Sense of adventure? heh, 305K on my last MB, and 125K on this MB, isn't exactly sitting around. I took a roadtrip 2,500 miles in the old girl to Las Vegas, NV a few weeks ago. I'm a roadie from way back I'm afraid.

OMG!
You guys are making too much of this!

Go, get your car, bring her back to San Fran.
At least you KNOW you're car, I went half way across the country (FL to CO) in a car I didn't know at all. With my 13 year old daughter. Still her favorite memory, though she is in Greece right now so that trip may top our road trip.

Just get phone numbers of every forum member who lives anywhere near the highways you'll be taking. John helped me by just picking up the phone one night.

You can DO it!
LOL!

x2.

The car overheats occasionally on grades but otherwise it fine right?

Plan your route around grades, head up 87 to albany, then west on 90 through NY dropping down into OH. That avoids all the hills of PA and gets you out into the plains, its rolling light hills with few continuous grades on 87 and 90 till about 80 miles west of albany where it flattens out pretty good up the Mohawk valley.

You could probably get the car all the way to the foothills of the rocky mountains without really taxing it after that, 2000 miles closer to CA. Every mile closer you get it, is that much less shipping money you have to spend on it if it breaks down.

If it craps out in Denver, jump on a bus or train and list it on U-ship.

If you decide to go for it

I would be cautious about taking so long a trip with a cooling issue

If you do decide to go, check with your airline about taking tools along. Certainly in Canada you can check a toolbox as checked baggage! I did this when I shipped the SD by rail to Calgary and I then flew out and drove it to the BC interior in the depths of winter across the mountains. US airline security is just plain silly sometimes so I would check in advance.

I can still remember the crash that echoed across the baggage hall in Calgary airport when the tool box dumped off the conveyor onto the carousel

I disagree. "Going to get the car," could end up costing over $2K. Having it shipped less than $1K. There's no contest between the two numbers, to say nothing about the loss of time working earning MONEY, instead of a wing and a prayer of a $2K+ debacle on the road.

Alright let me clear something up.

This car does not necessarily overheat. I do not let it get higher than maybe 105c before I become worried and therefore usually will let it cool down a little if the hill will continue for another two miles or so. I've got the dreaded #14 on the top end and it scares me.

Again this only happens on extreme hills.

I need to put some more viscous fluid in my fan clutch and the problem will go away as it has once before. I like the suggestion of shorting the auxiliary fan to have it on all the time but would like to make a switch for it if possible.

I have driven this car probably for 6 hours straight on highways and it never got close to 100c, if memory serves me well it usually always sits at 85 -90c even when it's hotter than sin outside.

Also, I will be driving with the majority of my tools, camping gear and some other misc stuff that I'll be bring back to Cali with me. I will definitely have extra fuel filters, oil filters, oil and coolant in the car with me.

I'm pretty sure that I'm going to do this at the beginning of May if I can get away from work. I'll keep you all posted.

Again thanks for all the suggestions and keep up the civilized banter, it makes this thoroughly entertaining

The best quote I got to bring the car to Cali was $1250. That probably doesn't include tax and what-not.

That is also a quote for a running car that they can load onto a trailer.

That sounds cheap and safe compared to the possibility of costs associated with problems out on the road AND cost of fuel to make the trip....

50% more expensive IF nothing goes wrong.

Potentially cheaper and easier and safer and all the other advantages IF something goes wrong, I grant you that freely and admit it happily.

But IF he gets away with it, it's almost half the price difference. To some, this is a big difference. (Myself included).

3500 miles / 25mpg = num of gallons * $4.00/gal avg = $560
Compared to which was his best offer to ship, that's lower than 50% of what shipping costs.

Add in $100 for meals, top off oil, etc, and you still come in WAY under budget unless there's a multi-thousand dollar roadside breakdown.

Question of how lucky one feels and how shallow one's pockets are.

I still think you guys are ' arm chair brave with HIS ASS on the line "...

Do you remember him saying THIS ::::

" For some reason my car just doesn't like big hills and if it's a steep grade and goes for miles I most likely will have to pull over after a while to let the engine cool."

???????

And you are still for him doing it ???

How about one of you volunteer to accompany him ? Spirit of Adventure and all that !!!!

That's virtually the same or less than you can fly and drive it for. Unless you have no time schedule, and can afford taking the time and chance of breaking down that is. Can you afford a couple weeks on the road if it doesn't make it, is the big consideration. Good luck with your decision!
