Yeah, we have been jumping right over that one.. with no one to even go take a picture of it.. he might get there and find someone had taken the engine out...

If the engine is gone it will certainly be a short trip but I have a good hunch that even if I gave someone directions to find my car they wouldn't be able to.
I already paid for my ticket and have to use the return ticket to NYC by the end of June. Money is a major issue right now for me, so saving $600 is an important factor. "I once was rich but now I'm poor", not sure who sang that but it's pretty spot on in this case.

Sure there's a risk. The upside is that if it works out, he has saved hundreds, and has his car full of stuff.
I buy Prevost motorhomes for a living. I have flown and driven out, usually at least a thousand miles, to buy and retrieve one of these 50,000lb beasts. Normally something (or everything) doesn't work. Bought one last summer in Springfield, MO. The electronic dash was dead, so I had no way of knowing air pressure, oil pressure, how much fuel was in it, speed, etc. The generator on the engine was dead, the 20kva genset was dead, no 12v to the dash for a GPS, no lights except brake and turn, no A/C, ... I could go on. I hot-wired some things, ran the engine systems temporarily off of a jumper-box (the 12v stuff), got to my daughter's house 120miles away and spent the night getting all systems on-line and working. After I finished, I replaced the LCA on her '94 E320, with no spring compressor available, got some sleep and drove home. It always goes like this. The next one I drove part-way home from South Carolina, had no electrical, got an NC State Trooper to jump-start the APU in a gas-station parking lot on the way home so I'd have house electrical systems, ... you find a way. These are multi-hundred-thousand $$ machines, extremely complicated, but I arrive prepared. So pardon me if I feel that the OP has an opportunity to prove-out the car before he leaves, ship a box of emergency parts/tools/supplies ahead to ride back in the car, and earn his badge. If you prepare for 90% of what can happen, we all know that the other 10% will happen, but you can still persevere. If everything that can go wrong does (we all know that Mother Nature sides with the hidden flaw), hopefully he has a contingency plan, which might be a couple of boxes in back and the Grayhound phone number. It will be a great story to tell his grandchildren, and us on the forum. Hope for the best, but be prepared for the worst. Now, I suggest that you take lots of emergency repair supplies, and I'd add a couple of feet of fuel line and a small tubing cutter. If you lose a fuel delivery line you can cut it open and route it to the plugged nipple on the #6 injector (unless it's the #6 line), and bypass the dead injector's return lines. Overheating? That would be bad. It sounds like it runs a bit warm, you need to seriously consider whether that's a failing head or gasket, thermostat, etc. You won't get far without the cooling system. If it's just the fan clutch, be sure it isn't loose and going to send the fan into the radiator, and I'd consider putting a switch on the electric fan. Running the electric fan constantly probably isn't a good option, draws too much current with your original alternator, you might not have enough left for lights. Not a bad idea to pull the regulator either and check the brush length. Break a leg.

I've done this trip in an unknown vehicle with overheating problems. The bad leg is from Salt Lake City to Truckee-- thats where it really gets hot. And lonely. Drive the hot parts at night. Keep a case of oil with you, a lot of coolant, and some hose and hose clamps.
In my case the power steering pump punctured the oil filter somewhere in Canada at four in the morning and pumped five quarts of oil on the ground, three minutes before I parked for the night. I didnt find out until the next morning. So thats how close you can cut it, and survive. Drive slow- the more fuel you burn, the hotter things get. Dairy cows dont take risks. |

Always better to invest in something you already know rather than something that was someone's castoff....fix your own car and take it to CA.
It's a long trip but if you plan it properly you can make it without taxing the vehicle, but be sure and check it out thoroughly before you get on the road. good luck!

Since you are full of 'positive encouragement' and ideas... how about this... Will you cover the difference in dollars if he has some major breakdown along the way ? 'Positive encouragement ' without realistic assessment of the potential loses on the other side is not responsible thinking... but at least you are consistently on the ' other ' side... as with the AC procedure threads in the past.

If you decide to make the trip, map out the forum members along the way who you can call for help. The AAA deal sounds like a good idea as well.
My decision to ship it or drive would depend on how much I could afford to kill extra time if I broke down. If you can spend the time working and earning $$'s that you would otherwise be spending on the road, you will most likely be ahead by spending the time working. Not as adventurous, but makes more sense from an economical viewpoint.
