You should not be able to turn the output shaft without turning the engine while the clutch is engaged and the transmission is in gear.

^X2. There is no way you should be able to turn the output shaft with the transmission in gear with a properly operating clutch.

clutch problem?
you can put the disc in the wrong way spring side to presure plate smooth disc side to the presure plate flywheel. pull transmission and check.

I think that ring in the pic is applying force to the pressure plate and allowing the disk to turn with the transmission. Find a pic of the throw out bearing and compare with yours. You have an extra piece in there.
It is possible that you have slightly mis-matched parts ie taller than normal TO bearing or pressure plate. This is a common situation on Datsun Z when parts from different years are mixed. Slide the trans back and compare the old VS new pressure plate, disks and TO bearings. The disk and pressure plate are oriented correctly. The disk is centered if the trans input shaft slides in.

A lot of parts are interchangeable between many Mercedes models and years.

yeah tranny will come out later tonight. i'm taking a beer-at-friends-house break for now just need to unbolt the tranny from the block as everything else is disconnected now, will post photos of the clutch assembly when i get to that point.
if i'm lucky it will just be a matter of that mysterious ring being removed, if not im going to guess i need a new release bearing. clutch slave should be replaced i think, but at this point i dont believe its standing in the way of the car being driveable.

Installing the clutch disc backwards will result in a clutch that will not release-the opposite of what you have.
Either there is a mis-match of parts or something is not assembled or adjusted properly. |

Did you put the exact same parts back on the new engine or did you add a new throwout bearing?

PICTURE TIME
it looks to me like the ring on the fingers of the pressure plate is the front surface of the release (aka throwout) bearing. the bearing assembly itself seems to function fine, and im inclined to think that while i should buy a new one, this is not related to the clutch failure. i think the problem in reality is that i installed my clutch fork incorrectly. when i removed it, it fell out on its own so i never saw what the correct installation looked like! this piece of springy metal goes on the stationary post side (opposite the slave cylinder). I assumed that it simply laid on top of the post, maybe being some sort of damper or something - wasn't really sure. it turns out this is actually a retaining clip upon further inspection. if i am correct, the mushroom tip of the post needs to be slid up under this springy metal piece. in my mind this totally explains my issue - there was only a few mm of extra pressure which was enough to cause the clutch to fail to engage even with the slave removed. i'll wait for some opinions before i reinstall everything, but i think i am probably right about all this and am relieved that it was just a stupid mistake in assembly.
