I'd use a new throwout bearing. Looks like you found the problem.

That close up of that "ring" proves that it was supposed to be there.
Proved me wrong.
Interesting, I've never seen that kind of clutch on a 240D. What year is it?

OH YES, by all means.... ' The RULE ' is that if you break open your clutch area.. particularly if you put a new clutch in .. you put in a new T/O bearing...
just too cheap to take a chance on having to do all that again sooner than the next clutch replacement... Actually it also applied to the pilot bearing...

now that i looked at it some more i am as stumped as you. the tranny is original to the car - year model 1981.

the pressure plate is Sachs - part number 3082 078 032

I've never had an MB throwout bearing in my hand. Why are people concluding that the ring is supposed to be on the pressure plate and not on the front of the throwout bearing?

It goes around both sides of the pressure plate fingers

The clutch cover with that part number is used on the M115 2.0 and 2.3 gasser engines.
A clutch cover that I have from a M102 2.3 gasser engine looked the same as the one that I used from a 240D though they had different part numbers.
