Clackity-clack 96 E300 Diesel

Just started the clackity-clack noise when cold then quiets to its normal diesel sound. What are possible causes? Also can't get the cross-over pipe off that runs from the air filter to the intake. I have removed the hex bolts on passenger side and the allen head bolt at the drivers side, but it won't budge. Am I missng something or do I just need to a longer pry bar? Thanks for your help.....

Larry..

Well all diesels are more noisy when cold.. I think it is perfectly normal.. how many miles her?

If you are thinking it is crud in the intake pipe, I dont think its possible for that to be the cause of your clatter.. as I said.. I think its perfecly normal.

It has just over 90,000 miles. I am familiar with this sound on the older diesels, but this one has had a much quieter idle until recently. I was able to get the intake off today, so that I could replace leaking return lines on the injectors. Any ideas on why it clatters now (bad injectors, trapped air...)? Thanks again for your help...

Have you driven it when it's really cold out before?

The diesel sound is normal when it's cold and then disappear as it warms up.

Dunno why you should be concerned that much. You own a Diesel, it should sound like one

(don't take that last sentence the wrong way, I understand how a new noise would get you worried, on mine there's a new sound every week that tends to go away on it's own)

Well explain more noisy? Does it sound like lifters tapping? Or does it sound like a very dull, hollow thud?

Dull hollow thud?

What does it mean if there is a sound like a dull hollow thud?

Injection knock.. the nozzle is not spraying a proper fine mist, and the fuel is not combusting efficently.
