New member, old car... 69 220D issues

Hello everyone.

I just picked up a 1969 220D. It's in decent shape, no rust, fair interior.
The engine starts but smokes a bit. Brakes are shot--the rears drag and the fronts plain don't work. The tires are good but it's gonna need an alignment.

I'm hoping to work out all it's issues and use it as cheap albeit slow transportation.

Anyway, I have access to a parts car but it's a w123 240D. Can anyone point me in the direction of a parts interchange list (if it exists)?

Thanks!!

There isn't going to be a whole lot interchangable between the 115 and 123. A few engine related parts and a few odd and ends here and there but not a whole lot.

PICS?????!!!????

Welcome to the group. Some parts like the rear brakes will probably be interchangeable but if you can pull together a list of issues, i'm sure people here can help you figure out what you need.

I had much the same issues with mine and bought rebuilt calipers and replaced the hoses which quickly resolved the issues.

Stop by www.****.org which is a website that is dedicated to the 68-76 W114/W115 models.

edited out competing site info... will replace if webmaster approves.

Thanks guys.

I'm excited about learning all I can about these cars. I hope to get it back on the road for minimal cash so this won't be a restoration but I'm no hack either.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm sure I'll have tons of questions.

Actually, here's one: the PO must been used a power buffer because the paint has been buffed off at the top of the fenders. Where can I find the paint codes on the car? I'm hoping to find a cheap solution. Duplicolor, perhaps?

79Mercy 04-04-2011 07:44 PM

www.paintscratch.com will show paint codes.. Duplicolor will not have the correct paint.

So is this a 4-speed gearbox, or an automatic?

Rear brakes from a W123 240D might work, you might have to modify the 1969 brake hoses as they use metal fittings coming off the calipers, shouldnt be to much trouble.

The front brakes from the 240D might not work, one W115's the caliper is mounted behind the hub, on W123's it is mounted in font of the hub. The only difference would be the hose connection and bleeder. They will bolt up just fine.

Thanks. It's a 4-speed. Wouldn't have bought it if it was an auto as I've heard those are even slower. ;)

I couldn't imagine an auto 220D. The 240D is slow enough.

I have driven a couple automatic 220D's. They are about like a 240D auto, not a huge difference to be honest.

What about the alternator? The parts car has a brand new 120amp unit on it, guy wants $70 for it. Are the glowplugs and injectors different? What's the going rate for used injectors? IP? It's also got a Thule roof rack on it. The rack clamps to the gutters so I can't imagine it not fitting. Where can I find after-market rubber? I need a shift boot and eventually seals.

79Mercy 04-05-2011 04:11 PM

Hmm i dont think the alternator will work perfectly, check that the wiring is the same on both cars... Wiring would be my only concern,if its the same then go for it. 70 is to much for a used alt though.

Check the fuel return lines on the 1969 injectors, are they metal, if so the injectors in the 240D are different. The later injectors used rubber return lines.

IP has a different fuel output.

115 parts

Hi everyone.I am trying to stay within the rules here with my post.I'm going to be parting out my 240d 115 soon. This rusted out car is going to give me the parts to go 4 spd manual into my 82 126.
it still has brakes and clutch working after sitting for 5 yrs.the motor runs great,It started at 10 degrees. The parts I need for the trans swap i'm keeping, but I'd like to see the rest used.
like the brakes mentioned here.Is it allowed to offer these items for sale here? Thanks.
