Numerous sources reflect that the switch to the plastic fan was accompanied by a change in clutch model. (Serial number cut-offs are identical.) |

I’ve owned three 1983 300D's. All have had the 6 blade metal fan. (Let me correct myself, I meant metal, not steel.) Engine numbers 0392xx and 052xxx both had them. I will attest I am not the original owner of those two. Nor I am I the original owner of 40xxx, but for that car, I do have all records and I am the second owner. No record of it being changed as the PO did all service at the dealership or at an Indy. Incidently the two 1984 Ds I owned, engine numbers 060xxx and 064xxx had the 9 Blade plastic fan. Quote:
The other information to note is all 300TD turbo use the 0002001922 fan even though they clearly had the 6 blade metal fan during the ’81-‘83 model years. Couple of shots of the Behr Fan clutch. The unit on the left came off a 9 bade plastic fan and the unit on the right came off of a 6 blade metal fan from the 1983 300D engine 39xxx. Both have FK1701 etched on the bimetalic strip and both have the number 3649 on the housing. Both bolt directly to each other fan. As for the operational difference between 0002000422 and 0002001922, I am not sure. .

new fan clutch is in, not nearly as much of a pain as i anticipated. pb blaster helped- but bolts were already a bit rounded from PO and one needed vice grips so needs to be replaced

Mjzraz,
No noticeable change in temps. It used to warm up over 100 degrees and worry me if I was going 90mph or more, and it seems to have tamed that high range. Still maintains a running temp just under 100. I drained the coolant and filled it with water to prepare for a flush to see if that helps.
